Job Description
Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital is seeking a part-time Relief Admin Nursing Supervisor. This position oversees the delivery of quality patient care following Cottage Health and department-specific policies and procedures, as well as directing and evaluating the care delivery of others to ensure continuity and quality.
Major Accountabilities / Specific Job Competencies- General - Due to the size and scope of Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, this position is not regularly required on the day shift Monday through Friday, thus requiring different work hours on weekdays vs. weekends, including holiday coverage. The position is also expected to assume various tasks that would otherwise be performed by support staff in larger facilities. Examples include but are not limited to locating and retrieving patient medical records, providing meal period relief for staff, securing medications from the after-hours medication location, transporting patients, and coordination of after-hours surgical services.
- Administrative/Management Functions - Responsible for planning and directing the overall management of nursing services during assigned shifts and functions as the administrative support and resource person for all hospital services.
- Acts as a resource to and collaborates with all departments, Nursing Managers, and nursing staff in the allocation of staff, admissions, and other resources.
- Acts as liaison between health care providers, physicians, patients, and families.
- Handles media inquiries and works collaboratively with all public service representatives.
- Acts as the initial incident commander in the event of a disaster until other resources become available.
- Supports the coordination, communication and collaboration of patient placement and management through frequent rounding to all patient care areas.
- Quality Management/Quality of Care - Demonstrates knowledge of quality management systems and assists the organization in achievement of its’ quality management programs.
- Demonstrates accurate knowledge of relevant laws, standards, and regulations as well as system, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures affecting decisions and interpretations.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Ensures delivery of quality care through serving as a resource and mentor.
- Maintains confidentiality of employee and patient information consistent with established guidelines, policies, and procedures. Uses discretion when discussing patient, employee, and organizational information.
- Provides suggestions to improve overall quality and day-to-day operations.
- Investigates any unusual occurrences or untoward incidents involving patients, employees, or visitors; makes appropriate notifications and participates in follow-up as necessary.
- Leadership Behaviors - Enhances teamwork through leadership, guidance, and direction toward a common goal. Demonstrates consistent professional attitude and behaviors. Practices the principles of effective communication and promotes the same in others. Provides continuity of patient care and supports the philosophy of the hospital.
- Demonstrates an understanding and acceptance of the philosophy, mission, and goals of the hospital and of the individual departments. Consistently exemplifies this philosophy.
- Maintains current knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Implements, and enforces policies and procedures as needed.
- Promotes positive relationships by demonstrating a spirit of teamwork and courtesy to patients, co-workers, and the public.
- Interacts in a professional manner with other hospital departments to ensure both quality and continuity of patient care. Supports the CQI process.
- Demonstrates the ability to lead, teach, and through positive communication, provide opportunities for others in the pursuit of knowledge and expertise.
- Provides leadership, guidance, and direction in the ability to work effectively with others, and to build teamwork toward a common goal.
- Practices the principles of effective communication and promotes the same in others. Utilizes the proper channels of communication. Keeps Administration informed of pertinent issues.
- Demonstrates advanced conflict management skills, including the ability to listen effectively and openly and to restate all points of view. Follows effective problem-solving techniques and delivers feedback in a constructive, specific, and non-judgmental manner. Facilitates and coaches staff in effective conflict resolution.
- Assumes the role of patient advocate in interdisciplinary communication to ensure quality patient care and positive outcomes.
- Assesses work assignments, patient care needs, and staff competency before delegating duties or tasks. Serves in a leadership role to coordinate activities.
