Job Description
Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital is seeking a part‑time Relief Admin Nursing Supervisor. The position oversees the delivery of quality patient care following Cottage Health and department‑specific policies and procedures, and directs and evaluates the care delivery of others to ensure continuity and quality.
Major Accountabilities- Due to the size and scope of Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, this position is not regularly required on the day shift Monday through Friday, thus requiring different work hours on weekdays vs. weekends, including holiday coverage.
- Assumes tasks normally performed by support staff in larger facilities, such as locating and retrieving patient medical records, providing meal period relief for staff, securing medications from the after‑hours medication location, transporting patients, and coordinating after‑hours surgical services.
- Responsible for planning and directing the overall management of nursing services during assigned shifts and functions as the administrative support and resource person for all hospital services.
- Acts as a resource to and collaborates with all departments, nursing managers, and nursing staff in the allocation of staff, admissions, and other resources.
- Act as liaison between health care providers, physicians, patients, and families.
- Handles media inquiries and works collaboratively with all public service representatives.
- Acts as the initial incident commander in the event of a disaster until other resources become available.
- Supports the coordination, communication and collaboration of patient placement and management through frequent rounding to all patient care areas.
- Demonstrates knowledge of quality management systems and assists the organization in achievement of its quality management programs.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Ensures delivery of quality care through serving as a resource and mentor.
- Maintains confidentiality of employee and patient information consistent with established guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Provides suggestions to improve overall quality and day‑to‑day operations.
- Investigates any unusual occurrences or untoward incidents involving patients, employees, or visitors; makes appropriate notifications and participates in follow‑up as necessary.
- Enhances teamwork through leadership, guidance, and direction toward a common goal.
- Practices the principles of effective communication and promotes the same in others.
- Demonstrates advanced conflict management skills, including the ability to listen effectively and openly and to restate all points of view.
- Assumes the role of patient advocate in interdisciplinary communication to ensure quality patient care and positive outcomes.
- Assesses work assignments, patient care needs, and staff competency before delegating duties or tasks.
- Manages multiple demands and demonstrates flexibility in providing leadership.
- Attends meetings as required and acts as a liaison to other institutions to facilitate quality patient care.
- Works with critical care nurse, provider, and bedside staff to facilitate the coordination of emergency situations, including patient transfer.
- Self‑directed in maintaining and enhancing professional growth of self and others.
- Keeps informed of changes by attending staff and committee meetings, educational programs, and by reviewing emails, departmental postings and other communications.
- Establishes personal goals and reviews them annually.
- Orients new employees, conducts ongoing assessment of their learning needs and evaluates performance.
- Minimum:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or current enrollment in a BSN program with an anticipated graduation date within an established timeframe. - Preferred:
Master’s Degree or equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum:
Current California Registered Nurse license, American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). - Preferred: AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
