Purpose of Position

Under the clinical direction of a District nurse and the general supervision of a site administrator, provide specialized health care services and general first aid to students, including administration of medical procedures, such as, but not limited to: catheterization, insulin and medical administration, and related record management.

Essential Functions
  • Administer basic first aid, CPR, and routine or emergency care and treatment to students under the clinical direction of a District Nurse.
  • Provide specialized health care services and general first aid to students including administration of medical procedures, such as, but not limited to: catheterization, insulin and medication administration, and related record management.
  • Assist medically fragile students with toileting, catheterization, suctioning, colostomy care, oxygen administration and other specialized physical health services.
  • Dispense medications based on established District procedures; maintain related documents and records, including cumulative health and immunization records.
  • Reconcile student health records with enrollment records; create and maintain a roster of students with health-related problems and students exempt from physical education activities.
  • Assess medical condition of students, administer minor first aid to ill or injured students; distribute bandages, compresses or ice as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of first aid and medical supplies and requisition replacement supplies as needed; maintain the health office in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition; maintain first aid kits for campus and field trips.
  • Assist in compiling data for District, county or state reports of school health issues, including results of vision and hearing screenings; prepare and distribute a variety of health-related reports, notices and referrals.
  • Protect confidentiality of student medical and health information.
  • Assist with implementation of health testing and immunizations.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Inside work with no exposure to weather conditions; some exposure to weather conditions during field trips or outdoor education activities.
  • Risk of exposure to disease/pathogens; blood and bodily fluids; medications; and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office or medical equipment; sitting for extended periods of time, bending, stooping or reaching above the shoulders to file or retrieve materials. Periodic need to lift, push, pull, carry or move equipment or objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of contemporary nursing principles, techniques, methods, procedures and standard nursing practices.
  • Ability to operate specialized medical equipment, including, but not limited to, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuff and sphygmomanometer, digital thermometer, oxygen, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), or orthopedic equipment.
  • Ability to treat common illnesses and medication side effects, and administer injections, medications, and perform catheterization, gastrointestinal tube feeding or other procedures.
  • Ability to analyze medical care situations appropriately and determine an effective course of treatment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain record-keeping systems.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and proprietary software programs such as Health Master, and/or mass market software such as MS Office or Google applications.
  • Ability to operate a variety of contemporary office equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
