JOB GOAL

The School Counselor works in collaboration with staff, parents and the principal to intervene with children experiencing challenges behaviorally, socially, and/or academically. The School Counselor uses evidence-based educational, psychological and behavioral strategies to provide behavior intervention and counseling services for students as determined through the referral process. This position is responsible for the structure and support necessary for the development and maintenance of positive behavior and academic goals set at the schools.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Master's Degree in school counseling, behavioral sciences, education or related field.
  • Valid AZ Guidance Counselor, Pre-K12 Certificate
  • Experience working with elementary-age children and those with emotional needs.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred (will train if not current).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Provide support for students via individual/group counseling sessions
  • Provide whole class instruction for "at‑risk" prevention programs
  • Provide crisis counseling to students
  • Assist with referrals to out‑source agencies
  • Maintains consistent behavioral expectations for students in alignment with the school/district rules.
  • Enforces appropriate behavior standards and intervenes as needed.
  • Work with the administration to establish a process and procedure for crisis intervention.
  • Work with students to teach responsible behavior and goal setting strategies and skills.
  • Accurately documents behavior and completes daily logs, point sheets, and parent reports as necessary.
  • Actively participates in professional development to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Collaborates with teachers and parents about the needs, suggestions, questions, problems, and progress of students.
  • Demonstrates professional and flexible attitude/rapport with other staff members.
  • Demonstrates appropriate interaction with the students at all times.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must regularly move about a classroom to monitor students and work closely with them in a variety of settings (on the carpet, at their desk, at the playground).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically restrain a student, respond to crisis which may include running.
