Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise the caseloads of assigned probationers.
- Meet with probationers in their homes or at their places of school or work.
- Conduct interviews and social or pre‑sentence/pre‑disposition investigations.
- Evaluate probationers' progress.
- Perform searches and make arrests.
- Handle duties in a safety‑sensitive environment, with risk of assault by probationers, family members or others.
- Maintain competency in defensive tactics as required by ACJA §6‑107(G)(1)(b).
- United States citizen or legal resident.
- Bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university (preference for Arizona Certified Probation Officers).
- Minimum age 21.
- Successful completion of a pre‑employment character and fitness background investigation, including fingerprinting, criminal history check, DCS Central Registry check, MVD driving records check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and drug/alcohol screening.
- Successful completion of a 40‑hour Defensive Tactics Training Academy no later than 120 days from the date of employment.
- Demonstrate competency and understanding of the physical and verbal techniques and tactics presented at the Defensive Tactics Training Academy through proficiency testing.
- Complete eight (8) hours of defensive tactics refresher training annually and maintain certificates.
- Complete Probation Certification Academy and Intensive Probation Institute within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- Submit to the required medical examination for the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan.
Job Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver's license at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed.
- Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
- If the Probation Officer chooses to be armed, must attend and pass a 40‑hour Firearms Academy and maintain eight hours of annual "shoot" requirement for recertification.
- Must obtain defensive driving certification and first aid/CPR certification within sixty (60) days of employment and maintain these certifications while employed.
- Must complete annual training as required by the Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET).
- Employees are subject to immediate call‑out during emergencies, disasters, homeland‑security breaches, natural or man‑made disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and acts of terrorism, and must be available unless excused.
- This position is safety‑sensitive.
