Extended Recovery Unit Nurse
Provides safe, high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and procedural interventions. This role is responsible for comprehensive postoperative assessment, continuous monitoring, pain management, medication administration, and coordination of care from Phase II recovery through discharge or transfer to inpatient units.
Responsibilities- Provide direct post‑operative nursing care for extended recovery patients, including safe recovery, continuous monitoring of Phase II patients, and discharge planning.
- Perform comprehensive postoperative assessments; assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document care with emphasis on neurological, cardiac, respiratory, hemodynamic, and pain status.
- Administer medications and manage pain per physician orders and hospital protocols, using the 6 Rights , barcode medication scanning, and vigilant monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects.
- Manage care of patients with complex devices; utilize less‑invasive life‑support modalities (e.g., BiPAP, ETCO₂); facilitate safe patient transitions and discharges.
- Collaborate with anesthesia providers, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams; communicate changes in patient condition to the anesthesia provider and other necessary ancillary support teams.
- Provide patient and caregiver education and validate understanding of instructions; adhere to all safety, fire prevention, and organizational policies.
- Interpret and operate cardiac and non‑invasive monitoring systems; recognize abnormal rhythms and trends; complete ECG education requirements and initiate appropriate clinical interventions.
- Initiate, manage, and maintain IV therapies (peripheral and central access); safely administer and monitor blood products; collect blood specimens using aseptic technique.
- Follow established policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.
- Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Minimum of 1 year of perioperative or related experience, with a focus on PACU.
- Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
- Arizona Registered Nurse License or a registered nurse license from a Compact state.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification—must have upon hire and renew every two years.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification—must acquire within 30 days of hire and renew every two years; ACLS cannot be performed independently until the AHA ACLS card is obtained.
- Ability to work 3 12-hour shifts, 10:30 a.m.–11:00 p.m.
