Responsibilities
Supervises, assesses, plans, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates patient care and staff development; determines and maintains unit or program needs and standards using the nursing process and evidence‑based information. Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission, and critical goals of the organization into performance. Assists the Clinical Director in managing the unit’s staff and patient population and provides direct patient care according to unit needs while collaborating with physicians in executing the medical plan of care.
- All RN staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of:
- Stroke symptoms and warning signs
- Protocols and pathways used to identify, evaluate, and manage stroke patients
- NIHSS
- Stroke Alert activation and protocol
- Stroke quality indicators
- Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
- Educational requirements
- Stroke Center website resources
- Oversee staff, ensure adequate patient care, including hiring, onboarding, evaluating, managing performance, coaching, and development to maintain productivity, quality of work, and alignment with mission, vision, and values.
- Establish or contribute to patient care plans, including medication administration, dosage verification, IV line management, therapies, treatments, observation, and documentation.
- Consult with physicians and other clinicians and ensure compliance with all policies while maintaining financial stewardship of department budget.
- Serve as a resource for staff, patients, families, physicians, and visitors to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes, and a healthy work environment.
- Teach patients and families self‑management, post‑treatment and home care, diet, nutrition, exercise, and medication administration.
- Facilitate inter- and intra-departmental collaboration, communication, and problem solving; participate in policy revisions and relevant committees.
- Create, implement, and monitor goals and action plans related to the unit.
- Participate in recruitment and retention of talented staff through positive role‑modeling, peer relationships, staff education, and preceptor/mentor programs.
- Coordinate educational and professional activities related to department/unit needs.
- Regularly round with physicians, patients, or families to facilitate quality practice and improve patient experience.
- Utilize the nursing process and evidence‑based practice to provide patient care and evaluate care plans.
- Initiate and support quality improvement initiatives and utilize resources effectively and efficiently.
- Direct staff in applying the nursing process and coordinate patient care to promote independent functioning among employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN, BScN) from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution.
- Legally licensed to work as a registered nurse in the State of Arizona.
- Stroke‑specific education requirements (refer to addendum).
- 2 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience (required).
- 3 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience (preferred).
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) – Certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Training Course.
- Registered Nurse (RN) – State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure.
