Responsibilities

The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and the Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests, analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.

The RN establishes or contributes to an existing care plan, including:

  • Administering medication, carefully checking dosages and avoiding interactions
  • Starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products
  • Administering therapies and treatments
  • Observing patients and recording observations
  • Consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians

The RN teaches patients and families to manage illnesses or injuries, explaining post‑treatment and home‑care needs, diet, nutrition, and exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate. The RN supports advancement of clinical knowledge and skills by precepting new hire staff and students, assisting them in completing competency tasks, and continuously enhancing knowledge in nursing management and patient care.

The RN may also work to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes, and a healthy work environment through a theory‑based, evidence‑based practice utilizing a shared governance model.

Stroke Patient Knowledge (for RN staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients)

Essential Functions
  • Collect health data systematically, prioritize based on patient condition or needs, involve family
  • Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and use nursing diagnoses to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate, family‑centered, developmentally and culturally relevant care plan
  • Identify individualized expected outcomes for the patient’s specific health problems
  • Implement interventions based on standing orders, policies, and procedures, including treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures
  • Provide nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs of patients and families with a family‑centered approach
  • Document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, and monitoring data in a retrievable format; evaluate progress toward outcomes and continuously assess the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to promote cost‑effective, high‑quality care
  • Evaluate own nursing practice relative to professional standards, statutes, regulations, and policies, maintaining current knowledge of nursing practice; systematically evaluate quality and effectiveness of practice
  • Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice; enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs
