Mission
The mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
Job PurposeUnder direct supervision of a registered nurse or other qualified practitioner, provide evidence‑based nursing care, administer medications, monitor for adverse reactions, and perform daily basic nursing care to assist licensed staff in delivering medical care within the medical clinic.
Job Responsibilities- Under supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician, perform a wide range of clinical tasks related to patient care.
- Conduct intake screenings and interviews for juveniles at the facility, collecting health information, vitals, and laboratory specimens.
- Administer and accurately record medication administrations to juveniles as directed by the Nursing Administrator, Nurse Manager, or designee.
- Observe, record, and report to the registered nurse symptoms or conditions of juveniles that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions, or side effects.
- Administer medications and nursing treatments, including first aid care, as prescribed by the Physician in accordance with established policies and procedures of SCDJJ.
- Assist with administrative and logistics functions for daily clinic operations.
- Maintain supply levels, order supplies, and ensure medical equipment is properly maintained and functioning accurately.
- Attend all required meetings and trainings and perform other related duties as assigned to support the agency and its mission.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED and current enrollment in an accredited nursing school program pursuing an RN degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, expected to graduate within 12–24 months after completion of nursing fundamentals, or have graduated from nursing school and be pending NCLEX exam results.
- Experience with electronic health records and knowledge of HIPAA preferred.
- Ability to interact with patients and collect and assemble information in a clear and concise manner.
- Understanding, execution, and communication of oral and written instructions; carrying out medical provider medication orders; effective oral and written communication.
- Judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying DJJ policies and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff members, personnel in other departments, and the general public.
- Understanding of or willingness to adapt to possible physical assault, property destruction, and infection risk; must wear personal protective equipment to prevent infection.
- Primary work locations are the DJJ medical clinics at all DJJ facilities in Richland, Union, and Dorchester Counties.
- Familiarity with duties related to custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within DJJ jurisdiction and direct or indirect contact with juveniles within DJJ jurisdiction.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Valid South Carolina driver's license.
