The City of Goose Creek’s Crowfield Golf Course is located just 19 miles from downtown Charleston in the heart of South Carolina’s Low country, offering an exceptional opportunity to work in one of the region’s most desirable areas. We are seeking a motivated professional with hands-on golf course maintenance experience, including leading a maintenance crew.

A degree in turf management and prior experience managing warm-season turf are strongly preferred.

Safety

Employee is responsible for adhering to all safety procedures and regulations established by the Department, the City and all State and Federal organizations. Any safety concern should be reported to a supervisor immediately.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for assisting the superintendent in activities related to the care and maintenance of the country club. The incumbent provides supervision and coordinates the ground crew.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists the superintendent with the supervision of activities and personnel of the maintenance staff.
  • Maintains the golf course and ensures proper playing conditions.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining drainage, irrigation, pumping, and water systems.
  • Supervises and assists with all planting, fertilizing, and care of turf, plants, shrubs, and trees on the golf course and grounds.
  • Assists with the maintenance and cleanliness of equipment repair areas, equipment storage areas, chemical and fertilizer storage areas.
  • Manages compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, OSHA, EPA, and Clemson extension rules and regulations, relating to chemical and fertilizer storage and disposal, employee safety, and public safety.
  • Trains and educates the staff on golf course maintenance practices while checking the quality of the work behind them.
  • Maintains accurate records pertaining to golf course activities, course maintenance, equipment repair, fertilizer and chemical applications, and pest control practices.
  • Communicates with pro shop staff, receives bids, and researches new cultural techniques in golf course maintenance.
  • Serves as back up to the Superintendent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Associate degree in Turf Grass Management, Horticulture, or Agriculture.
  • One year’s experience performing golf course maintenance or landscaping, to include experience in supervision.
  • Any combination of education and experience totaling three years may be considered.
  • South Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s license - Ornamental and Turf Pest Control (Category
    3).
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s license.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance and pesticide application.
  • Knowledge of safety practices involved in turf maintenance.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of greens, fairway, tee, and rough mowers.
  • Ability to organize projects, manage work crews, and motivate employees.
  • Ability to operate backhoe, weed eater, soil probe, sprayer, aerifier, spreader, cup cutter, edger, chainsaw, and brush cutter.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to be attentive to surroundings while working on a golf course.
  • Ability to multi-task.
Physical Demands

The work requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and the following physical abilities: crouching, grasping, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Work Environment

The work is typically performed outdoors with constant exposure to noise, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, insects and inclement weather. Employee exposed to a variety of maintenance equipment and chemicals.
