Lecturer Position in Chemistry
The University of Southern Maine's Department of Chemistry invites applicants for a 9-month, fixed length faculty appointment at the Lecturer rank for the academic year (late August – May).
This instructor will be required to teach four courses each semester (fall/spring). Teaching responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Quantum Chemistry (CHY 371) (Fall 2026) - Principles of theoretical chemistry: quantum mechanics and spectroscopy. Topics include: quantization of translational, rotational, vibrational, and electronic energy; hydrogen orbitals; variational method and perturbation theory; multielectron atoms; chemical bonding; group theory; spectroscopy; and introductory statistical mechanics.
- Laboratory Techniques I Lab sections (CHY 114) (Fall 2026) - A project-based laboratory experience to illustrate the principles presented in Principles of Chemistry I (CHY 113).
- Thermodynamics Lecture and Lab (CHY 373 & 374) (Spring 2027) - Principles of theoretical chemistry: classical thermodynamics, molecular energetics, equilibrium, reaction kinetics, statistical thermodynamics, and electrochemistry.
- Laboratory Techniques II Lab sections (CHY 116) (Spring 2027) - A project-based laboratory experience to illustrate the principles presented in Principles of Chemistry II (CHY 115).

This position is located on the Portland Campus and will pay an annual salary of $53,821. It is an on-campus, in-person teaching position. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon the university culture of "student focused every day" and allows for regular participation in on-campus activities, meetings, and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry or an equivalent discipline.
- Teaching experience in higher education is preferred.
