The University of Southern Maine is seeking a detail-oriented and service-focused individual to join our Student Financial Services team as an Accounting Support Specialist CL2
.
In this role, you will serve as a primary point of contact for student account inquiries and provide direct support for financial transactions and account activity. You will assist students and families by explaining account balances, billing processes, payment options, and related policies, and will handle both routine and more complex inquiries with professionalism and accuracy.
Responsibilities include posting and processing payments, maintaining and updating student accounts, supporting billing and payment plans, and processing transactions such as deposits, refunds, and adjustments. You will also operate and reconcile cash drawers, prepare deposits, and ensure accurate daily reconciliation of financial activity.
You will monitor account balances, identify and help resolve discrepancies, and conduct outreach related to past‑due balances and account holds in accordance with established procedures. Additional responsibilities include processing financial aid–related transactions, maintaining records, running queries to support account monitoring, and assisting with general office operations.
This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment in applying policies and procedures, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, customer‑facing environment.
This is a full‑time, in‑person position on our Gorham campus. The pay for this position is as follows:
- Before July 1: $19.61 per hour
- After July 1: $20.39 per hour
Internal hourly candidates may be eligible for a transfer rate based on years of service in the bargaining unit.

Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- Demonstrated administrative and accounting support or comparable experience
- Ability to work well with many people at all levels
- Computer proficiency (e.g., MS Office, web)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry
