Position: Clinical Counselor (Full-time, 10-months)

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and student-centered Clinical Counselor (10-months) to join our Health and Counseling Services team. This position provides comprehensive mental health counseling services that promote student wellness, resilience, and academic success.

As a Clinical Counselor, you will provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, outreach programming, and mental health education while working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to support student well-being through counseling, outreach, consultation, prevention, and crisis response.

What You’ll Do:

Clinical Counseling
  • Conduct intake assessments for students and employees through scheduled and walk-in appointments.
  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling addressing personal, academic, social, family, vocational, and mental health concerns.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation.
  • Provide telehealth counseling services using HIPAA-compliant technology when appropriate.
Crisis Intervention & Consultation
  • Participate in the department's on-call rotation to assess and respond to students experiencing acute psychological distress.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, and campus partners regarding student mental health concerns.
Outreach & Prevention
  • Facilitate workshops, presentations, and support groups that promote student mental health and well-being.
  • Partner with campus departments and student organizations to address emerging student needs and foster a culture of wellness.
  • Engage in outreach initiatives serving diverse student populations and campus communities.
Collaboration & Professional Practice
  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and work groups.
  • Complete documentation and other administrative responsibilities associated with counseling services.
  • Stay current with best practices, ethical standards, and emerging trends in college mental health.
What We’re Looking For

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • 5+ years of licensure and experience and a willingness to supervise trainees and interns.
  • Strong clinical assessment, counseling, and crisis intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of counseling theories, short-term therapy models, and diagnostic practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and consultation skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • A commitment to supporting diverse student populations and creating an inclusive campus environment.
  • Sound professional judgment and adherence to ethical standards of clinical practice.
Pay and Benefits

This is an in person, full-time, 10-month position based on our Gorham Campus but may provide services on all three campuses. This position offers an annual salary of $45,000.00, along with a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off (13 holidays, vacation, and sick leave), health, dental, and vision insurance, life and disability coverage, tuition benefits for employees and eligible dependents, and a 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution.
