POSITION SUMMARY:

The Medical Director defines the structure and scope of the health center’s clinical program, provides leadership and supervision to physician and mid-level providers, leads quality improvement activities to assure the provision of quality care to all users of the health center, and provides ambulatory and primary care for patients; ensures patients receive health care of the highest quality while resources are utilized in the most cost-effective manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides direct patient care.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of the delivery of medical care by clinical staff through direct supervision and audits; serves as a mentor and manages the resolution of practice-related problems.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection process of medical providers and provides regular performance reviews and feedback.
  • Assists in the achievement of productivity standards and provides leadership within the health care team to achieve those standards; establishes standards of care and maintains medical policies and guidelines for the health centre; updates clinical guidelines, protocols and procedures and works to ensure that they are adhered to.
  • Evaluates community health and environmental needs by reviewing statistical data and contact with area residents.
  • Develops a quality assurance plan, arranges for audits, recommends corrective action, and implements and oversees approved plans.
  • Represents the health centre at appropriate clinical and public health meetings.
  • Conducts Peer Review regularly and provides any corrective action plans, as indicated. Sets standards for evidence-based care.
  • Works collaboratively with the Practice Manager to set the agenda and to facilitate our monthly provider meeting.

    Work is performed primarily in a typical doctor's office setting. Noise level is usually quiet. Employee must be available to work long hours as needed, including evenings, weekends, and travel in and out of state.

    QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED FOR POSITION:
    Experience and Skill Requirements:

    The following experience and skills are considered essential:

    • Seven to ten years of experience in the practice of family or internal medicine is required.
    • At least five years of experience directing medical services is desired, but not an absolute pre-requisite.
    • Clear understanding of and commitment to the health centre’s mission.
    • Knowledge of health problems and disparities affecting homeless and other low-income persons.
    • Knowledge of quality improvement concepts and practices.
    • Ability to work effectively with culturally and economically diverse professionals, non-professional staff, patients and community partners.
