Description:

Through leadership, advocacy, collaboration, consultation and systemic change, school counselors promote success for ALL students in the areas of academic development, college/career readiness and social/emotional learning. Services are implemented through a comprehensive school counseling program which includes delivery of core curriculum lessons, program management, student advocacy, small group and individual counseling.

The school Counseling Program is aligned with the district's vision and mission statements and is delivered from a foundation of beliefs based on state and national standards that serve as the guiding principles for design and management.

Qualifications:

* Valid Indiana School Counselor license

* School Counseling experience preferred

* Teaching experience preferred

* Demonstrated success in mediation relationship building

* Demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to local, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws pertaining to school counseling (e.g. privileged communication)

* Adhere to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Ethical Standards

* Demonstrate knowledge of ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors and the Indiana Department of Education Program Standards for School Counseling

* Promote the mastery of the Indiana Department of Education Student Standards for School Counseling

* Demonstrate continuous personal growth and professional development

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Must feel comfortable teaching lessons to students K-6

* Must be able to work with students in small groups and individually in a confidential manner

* Guide and counsel groups of individual students through the development of social and emotional intelligences

* Confidentiality skills and good communication are necessary

* Ability to collaborate and follow through on tasks

* Must be organized and have knowledge of community resources

* Implement the counseling curriculum

* Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding the developmental needs of students

* Refer students with severe problems to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents

* Be a part of the Building Coalition team by attending team meetings

* Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation

* Abide by state statues, school board policies and regulations

* Assist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized test scores for students and parents

* Attend IEP and 504 meetings according to caseload

* Facilitate informational evening sessions for parents regarding school goals

* Serve on committees as assigned

* Attend required meetings and training sessions as directed

* Other duties as assigned by building principal and/or supervisor

Data-Based Accountability:

* Annually revise the school counseling program as a result of analysis of evaluation data

* Identify data-informed annual goals along with the measured impact of direct services delivery

* Deliver data-informed classroom, small-group and closing-the-gap activities and interventions

* Design calendars reflecting the appropriate use of time aligned with ASCA National Model recommendation of 80% of time in direct and indirect services to students

* Collect and analyze results data from classroom, small groups and closing-the-gap activities and interventions

* Measure student growth of outcome data areas, including academic achievement/grades, attendance, and behavior/discipline

Classroom Counseling Lessons:

* Design, deliver, evaluate and revise the Elkhart County School Counseling curriculum, including school-specific curriculum, meeting state and national standards for guiding student success including classroom lessons covering:

* Academic development (e.g. academic planning, student skills, test taking strategies, organizational strategies)

* Career development (e.g. college/career aspirations, awareness, exploration, and readiness)

* Social Emotional Learning (e.g. self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making)

Student Counseling:

As appropriate and aligned to ASCA Ethical Standards

* Identify counseling needs related to personal and social development

* Provide student assistance services, including individual and group counseling, crisis counseling and referrals, for students with personal or social concerns that interfere with learning

* Provide consultation to administrators, teachers, parents, and community agencies

* Coordinate student assistance activities delivered by school counselors or others including teachers, peer and community mental health agencies

Student Advocacy:

* Participate in and/or facilitate school improvement initiatives
