HVAC Technician

Job Description

This position performs a variety of mechanical maintenance functions, which encompass all trades and disciplines. The HVAC Technician maintains District heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems to meet Federal and State codes and requirements. Additional responsibilities include new equipment installation, part orders, troubleshooting HVAC equipment, maintaining computerized building automation systems, electrical installations, electrical reports, and other mechanical related work as assigned.

Position

Purpose

Maintains District heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems to meet Federal and State codes and requirements, including installation, part orders, troubleshooting, and building automation systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of department operating procedures including work order, credit card, ISO, and other procedures.
  • Knowledge of heat, ventilation, and air conditioning system replacement and common problems.
  • Knowledge of DDC/Energy management and energy-savings methods.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment for replacement, repair, and operation of HVAC systems, controls, mechanical machinery, and equipment in school buildings.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of electrical work and other trades, including asbestos handling.
  • Knowledge of approved HVAC and electrical methods, code requirements, and safety.
  • General knowledge of maintenance requirements of assigned systems.
  • Ability to learn and implement the district’s computerized work order system.
  • Skill in hand and power tools for HVAC replacement and repair.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Associate’s Degree in refrigeration preferred but not required.
  • Two years of experience maintaining commercial kitchen and refrigeration equipment preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge and experience with HVAC, heating, and other mechanical equipment.
Certification and License Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience maintaining commercial kitchen and refrigeration equipment.
  • NC HVAC License/Certification(s).
  • Universal EPA Certification for refrigerant recovery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Repairs, replaces, and maintains all types of heating and cooling systems located in all schools.
  • Ensures smooth, safe, and efficient operation of HVAC systems and related electrical equipment.
  • Familiar with regulations and codes that pertain to electrical and HVAC maintenance.
  • Applies indoor air quality procedures and implements solutions.
  • Inspects requests for service to determine the cause of mechanical problems and implements the work order.
  • Assists in conducting periodic inventory of tools and equipment and submits reports to the foreman.
  • Ensures automotive equipment is operated and maintained per district policies.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the HVAC Mechanic Foreman.
Working Conditions

Work is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment, tools, motor vehicles, climb ladders and scaffolding, and maneuver in tight spaces.

Physical Demands

May require climbing and maneuvering on ladders, scaffolding, or in tight spaces; may require up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; up to 75 pounds frequently; or up to 25 pounds constantly.

Work Environment

Employees work in indoor and outdoor environments and interact with staff, students, and the public.
