Child Welfare Social Work Supervisor

Alamance County Department of Social Services is seeking an experienced Child Welfare Social Work Supervisor to lead a dedicated team of professionals committed to ensuring the safety, permanency, and well-being of children throughout our community. This position is subject to reallocation contingent upon funding, agency needs and client population and are subject to perform work during emergency or disaster situations as required and may be required to staff shelter overnight. As a Child Welfare Social Work Supervisor, you'll provide leadership, guidance, and oversight for multiple Child Protective Services programs, including:
- Child Protective Services Assessment & Treatment
- In-Home Services
- Foster Care
- LINKS/ Extended Foster Care
- Agency Facilitation
You'll play a vital role in developing staff through training, supporting complex case decisions, ensuring compliance with state policy, and fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability through case review and consultation. The successful candidate will have considerable knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies.

- In-depth knowledge of social work practices, complex case management, and child welfare systems.
- Strong understanding of In Home Services, LINKS, and Foster Care policies, and best practices.
- Leadership that balances strength, empathy, and adaptability.
- Experience navigating challenging family dynamics, emotional and mental health crises, and high-pressure decisions
The employee is primarily assigned to the In-Home Services Team and is responsible for:
- Lead & Supervise:
Provide day-to-day supervision, mentorship, and support for a skilled team handling foster care and licensing cases. - Coordinate & Streamline:
Oversee case assignments, workflow, and ensure quality and timely service delivery. - Train & Empower:
Facilitate ongoing training and professional development for staff, interns, and new hires. - Recruit & Retain:
Drive creative strategies to recruit new foster homes and retain our invaluable existing foster families. - Review & Improve:
Monitor casework for accuracy, compliance, and effectiveness—always aiming for excellence. - Answer the Call:
Participate in the emergency on-call rotation, stepping in during crises to provide leadership and support.
In addition, the employee may be required to perform duties that support Child Protective Services (Assessment & Treatment), including but not limited to:
- Provides supervision and managerial functions including planning, organizing/directing, training, setting work standards, reviewing work, counseling and disciplining and performing other personnel functions for lower-level social workers, students, interns and other staff members.
- Must often work with complex and involved family dynamics, acute to severe medical and/or emotional disorders and mental illnesses that the client may possess as well as handle emergencies and crises as they arise-on an almost daily basis.
- Serves a rotational on-call and back up schedule for emergency situations involving the need to be available after hours for child welfare needs.
Master's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a master's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of directly related experience;
