The Dean of Students plays a vital leadership role in fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive school culture where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Working collaboratively with students, families, faculty, staff, and administrators, the Dean leads efforts to promote student success through student support systems, school climate initiatives, attendance improvement strategies, restorative practices, and behavioral interventions.
This position provides an exciting opportunity to shape and strengthen school wide systems that support student growth and well-being. The successful candidate will lead restorative practices initiatives, support student success through the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process, develop and implement a comprehensive advisory program, oversee attendance interventions, and help ensure a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment. The Dean of Students also serves as a key member of the administrative team in managing student conduct, responding to crisis situations, coordinating student activities, and promoting a culture of belonging and accountability throughout the school community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Serve as a resource for building staff, administrators, and parents in working with students, creating a positive school climate, and helping students develop a positive self concept.
* Assist the principal in maintaining standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment and effective participation in all activities.
* Plan and implement an advisory program designed to develop student character and positive school conduct in accordance with District and school standards.
* Assist the principal in the coordination of campus security, facilities and grounds.
* Confer with and advise parents on matters of student's behavior and the implementation of effective programs related to student discipline.
* Monitor student attendance and oversee intervention strategies for students chronically absent.
* Serve as the School Climate Coordinator and lead staff training in restorative practices
* Develop, implement and monitor a plan for implementing restorative practices within the school community.
* Provides leadership for and coordinates a variety of student programs and student activities including both school sponsored and extracurricular activities.
* Assist in the supervision of students before, during and after the school day.
* Act as liaison with social service and youth service agencies in pursuing referral follow ups.
* Communicate with parents, central office, the public, other schools and public agencies including the police, juvenile authorities and county agencies as necessary.
* Assist with the planning, development and revision of students and teacher handbooks, manuals, orientation materials and forms including all policies related to student discipline; school climate and bullying; non-discrimination; sexual harassment.
* Collaborate to prepare for and manage crisis situations that may include, but not limited to escalated interpersonal interactions, threat and risk assessments, possession of controlled substances, and emergency planning
* Participate in Planning and Placement Team and Section 504 meetings as appropriate
* Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Connecticut Intermediate Administrator and Supervisor (092) certification required or eligibility for certification.
* Demonstrated experience supporting student behavior, attendance, and school climate initiatives.
* Experience implementing restorative practices and leading collaborative teams preferred.
* Strong communication, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills.
The first year of compensation will be determined based on the administrator's years of experience, with a salary range between $122,536- $127,104 for a 197 day work year.
