Quality Manager – Metallurgy / Heat Treatment

Location: East Granby, CT Area

Compensation: $110,000–$130,000/year

Schedule: Day Shift

Position Overview

Our client, a well-established manufacturing organization with more than 60 years of industry experience, is seeking an experienced Quality Manager with a strong background in metallurgy and heat treatment to join its East Granby, Connecticut operation.

This is not a traditional quality-management position. The ideal candidate will combine quality leadership experience with strong hands‑on metallurgical knowledge and the ability to evaluate microstructures, troubleshoot heat‑treatment processes, perform root cause analysis, and resolve complex technical quality issues.

The facility provides precision‑controlled metal and steel heat‑treatment services supporting customers across the aerospace, automotive, heavy equipment, industrial machinery, rail, and tool & die industries

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Quality Manager, Metallurgist, Metallurgical Engineer, or Materials Engineer who wants to take ownership of quality initiatives while remaining heavily involved in the technical side of metallurgy and heat treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage quality initiatives while promoting a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
  • Provide metallurgical expertise to production, engineering, quality personnel, and customers.
  • Perform and/or oversee metallurgical evaluations, including microstructure analysis, hardness testing, and failure analysis

  • Investigate internal and customer quality concerns and determine the metallurgical and/or process‑related root cause.
  • Lead corrective and preventive actions to address quality issues and prevent recurrence.
  • Support and troubleshoot heat‑treatment processes to ensure components meet required mechanical properties, metallurgical specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Work with processes including carburizing, quenching, tempering, annealing, nitriding, vacuum heat treatment, surface hardening, and related thermal processes

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve quality systems, procedures, documentation, and work instructions.
  • Lead and support internal, customer, and third‑party quality audits.
  • Partner closely with production and engineering teams to identify process improvements and reduce defects and variation.
  • Analyze quality data and manufacturing trends to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Interface directly with customers regarding technical, metallurgical, and quality‑related concerns.
  • Mentor and develop quality personnel while establishing clear expectations and accountability.
  • Ensure certifications, inspection records, metallurgical results, and other required quality documentation are accurate and properly maintained.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience within quality, metallurgy, materials engineering, heat treating, or a related manufacturing environment

  • Strong hands‑on knowledge of metallurgy and ferrous materials
    .
  • Experience with heat‑treatment processes such as carburizing, quenching, tempering, annealing, nitriding, induction/surface hardening, or vacuum heat treatment.
  • Hands‑on experience evaluating microstructures and interpreting metallurgical test results.
  • Experience with hardness testing, metallographic analysis, failure analysis, and/or related laboratory techniques.
  • Strong root cause analysis and corrective action experience.
  • Experience working within a manufacturing quality management system.
  • Previous leadership experience within quality, metallurgy, engineering, or manufacturing.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings effectively with customers, engineers, production personnel, and senior leadership.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent hand‑two industry experience will be considered.
