The Piping Estimator I is an entry-level estimator responsible for supporting plumbing and hydronic/HVAC piping bids under the guidance of Senior and Chief Estimators. This role focuses on quantity takeoffs, vendor pricing support, bid coordination, and estimating documentation across hard-bid, negotiated, and design-build projects in commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, and educational markets. The PE I develops foundational knowledge of piping systems, labor methodology, estimating software, and bid execution while progressing toward independent estimating responsibilities.
Requirements- Support plumbing and hydronic/HVAC piping estimates from bid invitation through submission under senior estimator supervision.
- Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents to identify scope requirements, coordination issues, and potential gaps.
- Perform quantity takeoffs in Trimble Autobid and Bluebeam Revu for piping systems, equipment connections, valves, specialties, hangers, insulation, and related components.
- Assist with vendor and subcontractor pricing by preparing RFQs, logging quotes, maintaining pricing files, and entering pricing into estimating software.
- Apply company labor standards and productivity factors while developing an understanding of wage structures, prevailing wage requirements, UA labor agreements, and project-specific labor impacts.
- Support bid-day activities including quote tracking, scope comparisons, pricing updates, bid forms, and estimate file organization.
- Maintain organized digital bid files including drawings, specifications, RFIs, addenda, vendor quotes, and takeoff backups.
- Support estimating database maintenance including material catalogs, vendor contacts, labor units, and pricing information.
- Develop working knowledge of applicable plumbing, mechanical, piping, and fuel gas codes and standards.
- Participate in estimating training, post-bid reviews, post-project analysis, and field visits to develop estimating and installation knowledge.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of trade background and pre-construction experience will be considered.
- 0–2 years of estimating, project engineering, or mechanical field experience preferred.
- Internship, co-op, or direct UA field experience is a strong plus.
- Ability to read and interpret plumbing and mechanical drawings, specifications, schedules, and riser diagrams.
- Basic understanding of plumbing and hydronic/HVAC piping systems, materials, and installation methods.
- Working proficiency in Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office; exposure to Trimble Autobid preferred.
- Familiarity with applicable plumbing, mechanical, piping, and fuel gas codes and standards.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and time-management skills.
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and accept structured feedback in a deadline-driven environment.
- Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record required.
- OSHA 10- or 30-Hour Construction certification encouraged.
- Trimble Accubid and ongoing estimating training will be provided.
- Primarily office-based in Grand Blanc, Michigan with periodic visits to jobsites, walkthroughs, and pre-bid meetings.
- Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods, navigate active construction sites, climb stairs/ladders, and wear required PPE.
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Travel within Michigan and occasional out-of-state travel may be required.
