The Engineer/Firefighter is the primary person responsible for the safe operation of the assigned emergency vehicle. Will take part in fire safety presentations and assist in doing station/vehicle tours. Prepare vehicles for future incidents and coordinate building fire safety inspections. The position supports the mission and vision of the fire department, and its command staff.
- Operates emergency vehicle when necessary
- Performs fire suppression, rescues, and protects people and the environment from hazardous material releases
- Performs cleaning of all stations and vehicles and does minor station maintenance
- Perform annual testing on various equipment
- Assumes responsibility for the completion of reports
- Assists or facilitates station and vehicle tours for fire safety presentations
- Performs fire safety inspections of local businesses
- Participates in training sessions, classes, and schools on fire education, fire prevention, fire suppression, and rescue
- Attends conferences and seminars approved by the Fire Chief
- Additional duties as assigned
- Successfully pass a pre-employment physical that includes drug testing, physical agility testing, and a background check.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D
- State of Michigan Firefighter level 1 and 2 certifications (must upload certifications with application)
- Demonstrated record of continued education through classes or seminars
- Maintain a valid Michigan Driver's License
- National Fire Protection Association level 1 Fire Inspector certification or ability to obtain in their first year of probation
- Experience with public speaking
- Written Examination – Selected candidates must successfully pass a written exam assessing knowledge relevant to the position.
- Structured Interview – Those who pass the written exam will advance to a structured interview.
Bargaining Unit Members of the International Association of Firefighters, Local Union 4962 interested in the vacant position shall make their interest known to the Human Resources Department on or before February 10, 2026. Non-members, such as existing part-time and/or temporary employees and the public, may make their interest known during the open period but the Employer will not entertain non-member applicants before February 11, 2026.
