General
Summary:
Facilitate the provision of patient care by performing basic, age-appropriate nursing care to patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide care for the age group(s) served.
- Interpersonal skills/teamwork. Demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to facilitate unit functioning.

Is a productive/professional member of a health care team; shows independence by completing duties with appropriate supervision; utilizes time in an efficient manner, completing daily activities in a timely and organized fashion; shows initiative in seeking out appropriate additional duties; presents self in a manner that promotes a positive image; communicates unit problems following appropriate chain of command and actively participates in problem-solving;
works effectively with others; attends department meetings and in-services regularly; performs other related duties as requested and directed. - Patient Care Skills. Assists the RN/LPN with functions to promote, restore, and maintain optimum patient health; participates in creating and maintaining a healthy work environment by accepting professional direction, communicating with the RN about the progress of work and problems encountered; performs patient hygiene activities; assists with patient mobility activities; assists with transfers of patients; keeps patients clean, dry, and regularly turned to prevent skin breakdown;
performs non-sterile treatments; assists with monitoring and reporting of patient pain levels; ensures supplies are available by retrieving and returning equipment per procedure; performs other related duties as requested and directed. - Patient Care Skills. Assists RN/LPN with inpatient and outpatient monitoring activities; obtains patient information and reports per policy; observes and reports patient elimination patterns; empties Foley bags and records output; completes I&O records; obtains and records patient weights; assists with preparation of patient for surgery and special procedures; collects non-sterile specimens; recognizes and reports abnormal or unusual situations in a timely basis;
utilizes computer entry as directed; observes patients in restraints for comfort and safety per policy. - Dietary. Assists patients with meals, snacks; prepares patients for meal service; assists with menu selection and meal service; collects soiled trays and returns them; delivers snacks; records patient food intake; communicates eating problems to appropriate personnel; orders non-food and food items; performs other related dietary duties as assigned.
- Transportation. Transports patients in a safe, efficient, timely manner; uses proper transfer techniques; observes patient condition and notifies appropriate personnel of changes in status.
- Safety. Maintains a safe environment for patients and co-workers; recognizes unsafe conditions and reports or acts; uses Universal Precautions; monitors patients at risk for falls or injury and follows related guidelines; reports broken or damaged equipment; operates mechanical and electrical equipment safely; disposes of biomedical waste properly; practices proper body mechanics.
- Quality Improvement. Participates in quality assessment/quality improvement activities; supports safety and universal precautions; completes QI data collection; participates in corrective action plans; utilizes cost containment measures; participates in developing corrective action plans for improvement.
- Environmental Services. Performs limited housekeeping activities in select areas as needed.
- Compliance. Complies with department and Medical Center policies and procedures, standards, and rules of conduct; adheres to absenteeism and tardiness policies.
- Essential Functions. Demonstrates mobility to move between rooms and departments, initiate and complete patient care evacuation procedures, move standard patient care equipment; lift, move, transfer, assist patients; uses transfer techniques; manual dexterity to perform patient treatments; organizational skills; interpersonal and written communication with patients, families, staff, physicians; ability to walk, stoop, reach; ability to push/pull carts; ability to climb ladders.
- Working Conditions. Setting is generally a clinical nursing unit; work requires prolonged standing and lifting; may be exposed to illness, infectious diseases, blood hazards, and hazardous chemicals; duties must be completed despite interruptions.
- Certified BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date required.
