Young Adult Services (YAS) is in search of a 1:1 Behavior Assistant. The candidate will provide individualized support to a student in a special education environment. The Behavior Assistant provides instructional, behavioral, and personal support to a student in the Young Adult Services Program. This program serves young adults with disabilities ages 18-26, focusing on functional academics, vocational training, daily living skills, and community integration.
The Behavior Assistant works under the direction of the classroom teacher and program supervisor to promote independence, safety, and success for each student.
- Provide direct, 1:1 support to an assigned student in implementing instructional and vocational activities aligned with their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
- Assist with personal care needs specific to the assigned student, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene, as outlined in their individualized plan.
- Collaborate with the teacher, behavior consultant, related service providers, and community partners to support the student's behavioral and transition goals.
- Implement the student's BIP with fidelity, using de-escalation and approved crisis prevention/intervention techniques to support positive behavior and respond to challenging behaviors as they arise.
- Provide consistent 1:1 guidance and behavioral support during work sites, community outings, and transportation, intervening proactively to maintain safety and prevent escalation.
- Collect and document behavioral data (e.g., frequency, duration, antecedent-behavior-consequence data) and monitor student progress, reporting observations to the teacher and behavior consultant.
- Support the assigned student in functional academics, daily living skills, job readiness, and community-based instruction, adapting strategies to meet their individual behavioral and learning needs.
- Assist in preparing individualized materials and adapting the environment as needed to reduce behavioral triggers and support student success.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all ISD policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher in education or human services preferred.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, especially young adults, strongly preferred.
- CPI, First Aid, and CPR certification, or willingness to be provided training upon hire.
Skills and Abilities
- Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude when working with students who have varying needs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, families, and community partners.
- Ability to assist with lifting, transfers, and physical support of students as needed.
- Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and/or assist students with mobility and self-care needs (up to 50 lbs) with or without mechanical assistance.
- Ability to work indoors, outdoors, and in community settings, including job sites and public transportation.
- Schedule:
Full-time, 185 days (August-June) - Employee Group: non-union hourly
