Job Summary

The Special Education Aide provides instructional, behavioral, and personal support to students in the Young Adult Services Program. This program serves young adults with disabilities ages 18–26, focusing on functional academics, vocational training, daily living skills, and community integration. The aide works under the direction of the classroom teacher and program supervisor to promote independence, safety, and success for each student.

This position will be a floater in our building, providing support where deemed necessary at that time. The candidate will be trained to provide 1:1 support to students and support community outings. After the  school year, this position will transition into a new classroom as a classroom Aide.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist the teacher in implementing instructional and vocational activities that support students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Support students in functional academics, daily living skills, job readiness, and community-based instruction.
  • Provide guidance and supervision during work sites, community outings, and transportation as needed.
  • Assist with personal care needs, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene, as appropriate.
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies and support positive behavior management plans.
  • Monitor and document student progress, behavior, and participation, reporting observations to the teacher.
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials and maintaining a safe, organized classroom and learning environment.
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, breaks, and other non-classroom activities.
  • Collaborate with staff, related service providers, and community partners to support student goals.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow all ISD policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher in education or human services preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities, especially young adults, strongly preferred.
  • CPI, First Aid, and CPR certification, or willingness to be provided training upon hire.

  • Ability to follow teacher and supervisor directions and work as part of a collaborative team.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude when working with students who have varying needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, families, and community partners.
  • Ability to assist with lifting, transfers, and physical support of students as needed.
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and/or assist students with mobility and self-care needs (up to 50 lbs).
  • Ability to work indoors, outdoors, and in community settings, including job sites and public transportation.
Compensation and Details
  • Pay:
    Per OSEA Agreement (Minimum hourly: $20.00 per hour).
  • Schedule:

    Full-time, 185 days (August-June).
  • Benefits:
    Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance. Participation in the Michigan public school retirement system (MPSERS).
