Job Description
This is a PRN/On-Call Position.
The purpose of this position is to support residents in daily living, while not providing hands‑on assistance. The porter serves as an assistant for resident services staff, assuring residents are treated with dignity and respect and assisting each resident to be as independent and self‑sufficient as possible.
Qualifications:- Typically, a minimum of 16 years of age.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position both physically and mentally.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Must be able to pass the State mandated criminal background screening and random drug testing.
- Deliveries to residents including:
Fresh ice water, towels, newspaper, daily mail, packages, etc. - Provides escort to and from meals and activities – propelling wheelchairs, walking alongside. Does not provide physical support or assistance.
- Assist with meal service: opening packets, pouring beverages, setting and clearing tables, delivery and pick‑up of room trays, etc.
- One on one visitation with residents as directed to ease loneliness or anxiety
- Light housekeeping chores including bed making, linen changes, straightening and dusting, emptying waste baskets, pick‑up and delivery of laundry, etc.
- Be a goodwill ambassador of this living center
- Comply with Life Safety policies and periodic “drills”
- Participate in educational and training opportunities
- Report safety and health hazards to the supervisor
- Report any observed concerns or changes in a resident to the Shift Supervisor
- Work cooperatively with co‑workers, supervisors and other personnel associated with this living center
- Report to work as scheduled
- Treat all residents with dignity and respect
- Comply with infection control protocols
- Compliance with all Resident Rights including HIPAA
- Compliance with all rules and regulations governing care of residents in a Home for the Aged
- Compliance with guidelines stated in the Employee Handbook
- Training new staff as requested
- Other duties as assigned or as may be necessary to assure the goals and objectives of the living center are fulfilled
- Able to walk long distances on hard surfaces for extended periods of time
- Able to stand for extended periods of time
Able to bend, stoop, turn, twist, squat, kneel, push, pull, reach, and stretch - Able to sit for extended periods of time
- Some repetitive motion work
- Able to communicate verbally and in writing with residents, co‑workers and supervisors
- Able to use telephone for communication
- Able to read and comprehend instructions in English
- Able to lift 20#
- Emotional stability to appropriately handle resident care needs, including chronic illness, challenging behaviors, dementia related issues, and death of residents
