Position Purpose

Reporting to a Director responsible for a group of Clinical Services for the hospital site and with/through subordinate personnel, assumes management responsibility for a single major (or multiple smaller) function(s), service(s) or process(es) that provides support to clinical operations. Provides 24-hour accountability for patient care delivery, planning, and evaluation of services for one or more clinical areas and staff performance. Initiates, facilitates, and supports communication among a variety of health care providers and with various external agencies.

Requires a high level of independent judgment and substantial latitude for independent action. Direct reports may include Clinical Leaders, Coordinators and/or high-level professional/administrative exempt and Nursing supervisory personnel.

Specifically, the position identifies the need for policy development and/or revision, defines policies in collaboration with higher-level management input, goals and objectives. Identifies the need for and drafts or defines procedures/protocols in collaboration with higher management input, goals and objectives; modifies procedures/protocols, as necessary. Monitors the quality and quantity of workflow to ensure work is completed. Initiates or recommends personnel actions such as hires, fires and disciplines.

Completes performance appraisals. Develops daily, monthly and/or yearly goals and measures and assists in developing and monitoring budget for single or multiple, closely related fields, areas or processes and, as requested, assists in assessment of goal attainment.

Required Qualifications Education
  • Associates degree in Nursing required.
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
Licensure
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Michigan
Experience
  • 3–5 years clinical experience. Previous positions should include successive levels of increased responsibility
  • Two years prior supervisory or manager experience and five years of clinical experience in similar areas.

  • Responsible for the overall management of the department’s daily operations to achieve quality improvement, fiscal productivity, and patient satisfaction goals and objectives. Ensures that care is provided through individual attention and holistic care while meeting each patient and family’s specific needs that promote the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of the patient.
  • Shows initiative and creativity in problem solving through active collaboration with members of the health care team, sees what needs to be done, brings it to the attention of individual(s) who can get it done, or independently does it without being asked or told.
  • Develops strategies that maintain high visibility with the clinical care team on all shifts.
  • Mentors staff to achieve expected professional and clinical behaviors by clarifying expectations, giving objective feedback, coaching, and reinforcing appropriately.
  • Ensures the delivery of patient care occurs in a safe, clean, well‑equipped environment. Seeks to incorporate the use of new technologies and methods to improve clinical outcomes, productivity and organizational effectiveness. Challenges current processes to identify more cost‑effective methods.
  • Ensures adherence to policies, procedures and protocols necessary to accomplish daily tasks, processes and long‑range goals consistent with standards established by Mercy Health, Trinity Health, JCAHO, CMS, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and analytical tools to manage projects, budgets and teams
