Production Operator physically manufactures quality powder coatings in support of PPG Industries, a leader in the powder coatings market. The incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility’s manufacturing equipment and the quality of the product at every step of the manufacturing stage while meeting all safety requirements.

PRODUCTION OPERATOR – Grand Haven, MI

Pay Rate: $23.70

Shift: 2nd and 3rd

Requirements
  • Successful completion of the employment selection process and experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of industrial production equipment, possess good math skills and mechanical ability, be flexible and willing to rotate work assignments, and be capable of forklift operation certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem‑solving skills, logical decision making, and capability to work without direct supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Preassembly
    Responsible for the weighing of raw material components according to a specific formula on a batch ticket. Raw materials are retrieved from the storage area, hand‑weighed, and placed on a pallet marked with the appropriate PPG Champ code. Pallets are then moved to a staging area for processing.
  • Mixing
    Tends powder coating mixing machines that mix the raw material. Ensures weigh out ingredients match batch ticket and that raw materials have been weighed correctly. Loads the raw material mixes into appropriate containers and mixes per normal operating procedures or instructions on the batch ticket. After the mix is completed, cleans mixers and prepares for the next operation. Completes information on machine activity on log sheets.
  • Extrusion
    Operates and cleans the extruder machinery to product specifications and extruder parameters. Reviews production order to ascertain product data such as product type, quantities and specifications. Sets the extruder parameters (e.g., torque, feed rate and extrusion temperature) according to written instructions. Monitors equipment to ensure all parameters stay within specification. Reports machine failure to supervisor or manager and completes information on machine activity on log sheets.
  • Grinding or Milling
    Operates milling equipment to grind product to customer specification by setting operating conditions per written instructions. Packages and labels finished product; disassembles, cleans and assembles mills and vibratory equipment; completes logs and other documentation timely and accurately. Maintains quality by obtaining samples at specified intervals during batch processing. Cleans and performs preventative maintenance on equipment between runs.
Quality

Operators must participate in the PPG Quality Process.

Safety

Works in a safe and effective manner to ensure personal safety and product quality. Must be current on all aspects of safety as detailed in the SOPs.

Contact With Others

Job requires routine contact with others to give or get information (e.g., Technical Personnel, Maintenance, Production Operators, Staff, Visitors).

Work Environment

Works in manufacturing, warehouse, and/or lab areas. Incumbent will be required to lift and carry up to 55 lbs and move up to 320 lb drums with mechanical assistance. Stair and ladder climbing, standing for long periods of time, stooping and pulling occurs. Requires wearing approved safety equipment: safety glasses with side shields, steel‑toed shoes, uniform, hard hat/bump cap, gloves, hearing protection, and dust mask or respirator (when required).

The environment is dusty, and the operator may get wet when cleaning equipment.
