Job Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring 2+ years of experience, ACLS/BLS/NIHSS certifications, and the ability to titrate drips on a high-acuity night shift.
Responsibilities- Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting with 33 beds
- Patient population includes young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem failure
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5; CNAs available at approximately 1:10 ratio (fluctuates based on census)
- RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, Insulin, and IV antibiotics
- RT equipment on unit includes BiPAP and Airvo
- Telemetry monitor techs are present, but RNs must independently read and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Charting system is Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); schedule is assigned by unit schedulers
- Every other weekend required
- Holiday coverage required as needed to meet unit needs
- Floating may be required to Med/Surg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care
- 13-week contract
- Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by 2 on-unit 12-hour shifts
- A pass/fail open-book skills exam is administered on the Friday of orientation week; a score of 90% or higher is required to continue the assignment
- Charge nurses are present on each shift; charge nurses also carry a patient assignment
- Unit is fast-paced with frequent admissions and discharges within the same shift — strong teamwork, a positive attitude, and commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding are key to success on this unit
- RNs are expected to wear navy blue scrubs
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments
- RTO must be requested upfront and is limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after the candidate is submitted
- Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
- Active certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Stepdown or progressive care unit experience required
- Experience titrating drips (Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, Insulin, IV antibiotics) required
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Driver's license required for consideration (used to verify permanent residence is outside the 50-mile radius)
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Candidates may not be currently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) at any Common Spirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity — those placed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
