Overview
This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is located at the Grand Island VA Medical Center - Community Living Center in Grand Island, NE. The center's mission focuses on delivering compassionate, person-centered care to Veterans who need extended hospital stays and short-term rehabilitation services. In this capacity, the LPN collaborates with a nursing team to support Veterans in achieving optimal well-being, preventing health declines, and ensuring comfort during end-of-life care.
QualificationsApplicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - English Language Proficiency
- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
- Education - Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the NLNAC at the time the program was completed by the applicant
- Licensure - Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia
- May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation
- Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria apply for each grade - GS-03 - None beyond the basic requirements; LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g. medication administration) with potential higher-level review depending on duty complexity
- GS-04 - Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, or graduation from an approved school with one year of related nursing care experience
- GS-05 - At least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent; demonstrated knowledge to provide a full range of practical nursing care; educate patients and/or families; serve as a team member; prepare, administer, and document medications; respond to changes in patient condition
- GS-06 - At least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent; proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties; observe and respond to patient needs; administer medications; assist in emergencies; provide education and precept less experienced staff
- Note:
The full performance level is GS-6; actual selectee grade may range from GS-3 to GS-6
- Total Rewards as an Allied Health Professional
- Assist with daily cares such as showering, dressing, ambulating, and feeding
- Participate in evaluating responses to interventions in health promotion, wound care, basic physical/psychological/social assessments, support care plans, palliative care, and hospice
- Prepare and administer medications prescribed by the provider
- Prioritize patient care needs and support care plans; inform the CLC Registered Nurse or CLC providers of changes in condition
- Perform complex procedures including catheterizations, peripheral IV insertion, saline flushes in peripheral lines, and maintenance of lines
- Assist providers with diagnostic tests and procedures; collect specimen samples
- Recognize and respond to patient emergencies, initiating life-saving measures as needed
- Provide Basic Life Support if needed
- Document data into the electronic medical record following established guidelines
- Mentor lower-graded LPNs and unlicensed medical staff
- Other duties as assigned
- Work Schedule:
Full Time, Sunday-Saturday, Day Shifts; rotating holidays and weekends - Pay and benefits details: shift differential, weekend premium, holiday pay, paid time off, parental leave, childcare subsidy, retirement options, telework/virtual status, relocation and recruitment incentives policies, and other employment terms
- Physical requirements:
