Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU position requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications, with night shift availability and ICU experience in an acute care setting.
Responsibilities- 16-bed Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU in an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, COVID, stroke, neurosurgery, renal failure, respiratory failure, COPD, cancer, and DKA
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2, with occasional 1:1 for TPA, balloon pump, or post-craniotomy recovery
- Specialized equipment includes Gaymar Hypothermia, Arrow Balloon Pump, Camino Neuro Monitoring, CRRT, Impella, EVDs, and lumbar drains
- RNs are required to titrate drips including sedation, paralytics, pressors, antihypertensives, heparin, and insulin
- RNs are required to read and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Respiratory support ranges from nasal cannula to mechanical ventilation
- EMR:
Epic - 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700)
- Every other weekend required
- Floating primarily to PCU, with potential to float to other hospital areas based on abilities
- Holiday coverage required as needed
- Responsibilities include managing complex ICU patients, titrating vasoactive and sedation drips, and participating in bedside shift report and intentional hourly rounding
- The unit utilizes an eICU remote monitoring system for additional patient oversight
- ICPs and balloon pumps are used on the unit, though these assignments may not always be given to travelers
- A charge nurse is present on each shift; CNs also carry a patient assignment
- Nurse aides/patient care techs are available at a 1:10 ratio
- 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation provided
- A pass/fail open-book exam is administered on Friday during orientation — a minimum score of 90% is required to continue the assignment
- Scrub color:
Navy blue - RTO must be requested upfront; 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract will be considered, and additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
- The unit serves a culturally diverse community, including non-English-speaking patients; the ability to provide inclusive, equitable care is essential
- The unit is fast-paced and seeks highly motivated nurses who are critical thinkers, open to learning, and willing to seek out resources
- Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses will not be accepted
- Active certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications will not be accepted
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- ICU experience required
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips
- Driver's license required for consideration
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address)
- Candidates may not currently be employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity
