Nursing Assistant- VA Community Living Center

Overview

This Nursing Assistant position is located within the VA Community Living Center at the Grand Island VA. The role provides care to Veterans receiving extended hospital care and short‑term rehabilitation, including help with activities of daily living, skilled nursing, and dementia care. The mission of a Community Living Center is to restore each Veteran to his or her highest level of well‑being, prevent declines in health, and provide comfort at the end of life.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

• United States Citizenship:
  Non‑citizens may only be appointed when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible.
• English Language Proficiency: proficiency in basic written and spoken English.
• Experience, Education, or Training:
  Six (6) months of general experience; or one year of education above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation; or completion of an intensive, specialized training course of study or program of less than one year.
• Grade‑specific qualifications:
  • GS‑03 – None beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS‑04 – One (1) year of experience as a Nursing Assistant or in another medical field, or two (2) years of education above high school with related courses; additional KSAs required.
  • GS‑05 – One (1) year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to GS‑4, or a 4‑year bachelor’s degree with related coursework; additional KSAs required.

• Assesses and records vital signs and basic health metrics.
• Assists with bathing, feeding, oral hygiene, ambulation, dressing, and other activities of daily living.
• Performs basic procedures such as blood glucose testing and bladder scans.
• Sets up and operates equipment such as oxygen tanks, suction canisters, and cardiac monitors.
• Encourages patient participation in therapeutic activities and promotes self‑reliance and independence.
• Supports suicide prevention initiatives and identifies emergency situations, initiating appropriate procedures.
• Documents daily living activities in the electronic patient record system.
• Interacts with patients’ families to provide comfort and information.
• Works in a team with RNs or LPNs to achieve rehabilitation goals.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Work schedule:
  
  Sundays to Saturdays, 8‑ or 12‑hour shifts with rotating holidays and weekends; scheduled between 5:45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.
• Shift differential: 10% for work between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.; weekend premium: 25% for work between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday; holiday pay: twice the base hourly rate for non‑overtime work on a designated holiday.
• Physical requirements:
  
  standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, and other activity as described; pre‑employment examination or evaluation required.
