Candidates may not be full time, part time, or PRN with any associated facility. Fingernail policy:
Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove nails will lead to termination of contract. RNs must successfully pass an exam during orientation. This is an open book exam on skills learned. RNs will be given all necessary resources to pass and must receive a 90% to pass. Unit has 33 beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5.
Common diagnoses include young adults through geriatrics, sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, and DKA. Patients may present with complex medical issues including multisystem failure. RNs are required to titrate drips; common titratable or set rate drips include Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin. There is a charge nurse on each shift, but the charge nurse will also take an assignment.
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are available on this unit with a ratio of 1:10, fluctuating based on unit census. The unit is equipped with BiPAP, Airvo, and other respiratory equipment. RNs must read and interpret telemonitor strips. Shifts are scheduled from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700. Unit schedulers will create the schedule. Weekend requirements are every other weekend and holiday requirements are as needed.
RNs may float to other units as necessary. Scrub color for RNs is navy blue. There will be busy patient flow, including admitting and discharging within the same time frame while also completing shift changes. Attributes that will help make a nurse successful on this unit include a strong sense of teamwork, a friendly and positive attitude, and engagement in patient experience.
Commitment to bedside reporting and hourly rounding is essential. In June, the unit will transition to a virtual nursing model, which will alter the nurse-to-patient ratio to 1:6. Each nurse will have their own CNA, and charge RNs will not have a patient assignment. The virtual nurse will assist with patient admissions, discharges, education, rounding, and care plans. RTO is needed upfront, with limited additional RTO approved.
The hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment. Charting system is EPIC.
