Position: AIRCRAFT MECHANIC at USAJOBS Grand Island, NE

Summary

This National Guard position is for an AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, Position Description Number D0483000 and is part of AASF 2, Nebraska Army National Guard.

Responsibilities
  • Perform inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on assigned aircraft including:
    • Pre‑inspection, daily inspection, pre‑ and post‑flight inspections and special inspections as required (fuel contamination checks, oil sampling, inspection of onboard emergency equipment)
    • Checks on hydraulic, electrical, transmission, power systems, etc.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient aircraft.
    • Full range of repair and testing of aircraft systems, assemblies, and surfaces using test equipment, visual checks, and instruments.
    • Diagnose problems, determine extent of repairs required, remove components and assemblies, repair or replace parts, and reassemble repaired items into the aircraft.
    • Install, align, and adjust major components and assemblies (engines, propellers/rotors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, etc.) and assist specialists as required.
    • Accomplish adjustments to related systems affected by repairs.
    • Conduct ground functional tests of all aircraft systems.
    • Service aircraft with oil, de‑icing fluid, fuel, and hydraulic fluid.
    • Launch and recover assigned and transient aircraft; perform inspections prior to takeoff and for conditions such as oil, fuel, hydraulic leaks, cut lines, tires, and loose panels.
  • May be required to perform additional duties such as fire fighting, aircraft crash/rescue, snow removal, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • National Guard Membership is required
    —Title 32 excepted service position; selectee must wear the military uniform and be a member of a compatible military assignment in the National Guard.
  • Applicants not currently a member must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the desired military grade.
  • Eligibility and open areas of consideration:
    • Area 1:
      Current permanent and indefinite technicians of the Nebraska Army or Air National Guard and current Title 5 employees of the Nebraska Military Department who are military members.
    • Area 2:
      All Drill Status/M‑Day members and temporary technicians of the Nebraska Air or Army National Guard.
    • Area 3:
      Current military service members willing and eligible to become members of the Nebraska Air or Army National Guard.
    • Area 4:
      All qualified candidates eligible and willing to become a member of the Nebraska Air or Army National Guard prior to hire.
  • Compatible military grade and assignment required; maximum E6, minimum E1. Grade inversion within the full‑time workforce is not permitted.
  • Security clearance/background check required; candidates must obtain the appropriate clearance within one year of appointment.
  • General experience:
    Skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components; ability to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications; proficiency with hand tools and test equipment.
  • Specialized experience:
    • WG‑05:
      At least 6 months using hand tools for repetitive mechanical repairs under close supervision.
    • WG‑08:
      At least 18 months of specialized experience in mechanical repairs, including detailed instructions for routine repairs and modifications to aircraft parts, sub‑assemblies, and components.
    • WG‑10:
      At least 24 months of experience in installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing major and minor mechanical and pneumatic systems during overhaul or modification. Must coordinate work of other mechanics and schedule maintenance for optimal workflow. Must instruct lower‑graded mechanics and personnel in disassembly and re‑assembly of crash‑damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls.
  • Education:

    No substitution of education for this position.
  • Additional legal information:
