Description

Provides library service and instruction to all patrons as needed.

Scope of Work
  • Works a minimum of 20 hours per week and no more than 29 hours per week.
  • Arrives at locations throughout Mesa County, including library branches and external outreach sites.
  • Provides a variety of services to patrons in person, over the phone and via email, including reference and readers’ advisory assistance and instruction on the use of library resources.
  • Facilitates access to library meeting rooms, programs, and more.
  • Responds to routine patron inquiries concerning library procedures and policies.
  • Assists in ensuring a welcoming, well‑maintained collection by creating displays, merchandising items, suggesting titles for purchase, and conducting regular weeding processes.
  • Builds and maintains subject Lib Guides as needed.
  • Works with staff across the library district to improve and provide outstanding library service to all patrons.
  • Provides tech help and instruction to patrons and staff, and may assist with staff training on topics such as reference skills, online databases, web resources, and computer training.
  • Communicates consistently and in a timely manner verbally and through email.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all MCL services, programs, and events, and promotes or develops library services and reference resources.
  • Assists with library programs, outreach, and special events.
Secondary Functions
  • Communicates clearly in person and via email and other electronic tools consistently and in a timely manner.
  • Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the library in achieving specified goals and objectives.
  • Stays informed on developments of Mesa County Libraries services and trends through monthly staff meetings, training, and other professional development activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements
  • Knowledge and current awareness of library policies and procedures, principles, materials, and layout.
  • Knowledge of alphabetical and Dewey Decimal filing systems.
  • Knowledge of Internet resources and basic searching techniques.
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices.
  • Skill in understanding and applying oral, written, illustrated or demonstrated instructions.
  • Skill in observing groupings and identifying misplaced items when shelving materials.
  • Ability to access, input, edit, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Ability to operate a variety of library equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to effectively use all office technology available.
  • Ability to investigate and document patron account issues in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license (preferred).
Physical Requirements
  • Remain standing or bending for extended periods of time.
  • Maneuver around the library in a timely fashion.
  • Bend to floor level or reach a height of 75 inches.
  • Read a minimum print size equal to 10‑point.
  • Tolerate dust, mold, etc. that may have accumulated on books.
  • Lift up to 40 pounds.
Working Conditions

Subject to many interruptions; performs duties within limited space at a desk.

Minimum Education & Experience

Education or training associated with the completion of a two‑year degree in college, vocational or technical school courses of study related to the area of assignment, or two (2) years’ previous library experience or retail customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Schedule

Unpaid meal break of at least ½ hour per shift to be taken for each 5 hours scheduled. Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to cover unplanned staffing shortages and department vacations.

Benefits

Vacations and sick leave, and 12 paid holidays. Employees are eligible for employer‑paid vision insurance, dental insurance, and an Appleton Clinics membership. Wage

$15.76 - $19.30 per hour, depending on experience.
