Department Information

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Description Of Job About the Work Unit

The Access Permit Unit in Traffic and Safety exists to preserve and improve the functional integrity of the highway system, to protect the public health, safety and welfare. This is accomplished by maintaining smooth traffic flow, issuance of all necessary permits, region‑wide planning, administration, management, monitoring and enforcement of federal guidelines, state statutes, and state rules and regulations.

About The Position

This position will Assist in administering the Colorado Department of Transportation's access management program in R‑3 in accordance with section 43‑2‑147 of the Colorado Revised Statutes and the State highway Access Code (SHAC). This position assists in reviewing requests for access and analyzes proposals for conformance with regulations and standards using sound engineering, safety, and planning principles. This position also reviews access permit applications, writes permits, and assists the Outdoor Advertising Manager with the Roadside Advertising program as it applies to the CO Advertising Act and Federal Regulations.

duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
  • Assist in writing permit terms and conditions for the issuance of Highway access permits upon evaluation and collaboration with staff and legal counsel.
  • The position must learn to work with local CDOT staff to determine if projects meet CDOT standards and policies for permits; then communicate the permit terms and conditions to the permittee.
  • Become familiar with SHAC, access permits, state statutes, and other rules, policies, and guidelines related to state highway access.
  • Periodically traveling throughout the region to conduct outdoor advertising and access inspections.
  • Learn to accept and review access permit applications for completeness to meet application compliance and determine if a permit should be issued.
