District Spanish Interpreter and Translator ()
Summary of FunctionsThe District Translator/Interpreter provides oral interpretation and written translation of a wide range of materials and communications, including correspondence, forms, articles, technical manuals, and educational materials, from English to Spanish and vice versa. The role also serves as an interpreter during meetings, workshops, conferences, and special events, performs related clerical duties, and facilitates effective communication among the school, the District, student families, and public agencies.
QualificationsRequired
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and Spanish
- Minimum of two years of experience translating and interpreting materials
- Successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check and clearance by the Office of Human Resources
- Effective communication in both English and Spanish, orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
- Experience working with children, schools, or health programs
- College coursework in Spanish
- Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and idiomatic usage of English and Spanish
- Knowledge of English and Spanish equivalent translations of general, technical, and subject‑matter terms
- Knowledge of Special Education language, documents, and procedures
- Knowledge of oral and written communication skills, telephone techniques, and etiquette
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers
- Knowledge of District organization, operations, policies, and objectives
- Ability to work without technical supervision, maintain confidentiality, and establish effective working relationships with District personnel and the public
- Ability to proficiently use and operate a computer and keyboard, identify and correct translation errors, and utilize online resources
- Ability to travel to multiple sites and operate a personal computer and peripheral equipment with modern software
- Ability to edit articles for publication in English and Spanish and provide information and assistance to parents and staff in a helpful, courteous, and timely manner
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Translate documents accurately and concisely from English to Spanish and vice versa for school and District-level functions
- Provide interpretation for parents during enrollment, suspensions, expulsions, IEP meetings, parent‑teacher conferences, and other parent meetings, including occasional after‑hours work
- Translate various information posted on the District's website into Spanish
- Perform clerical work such as typing, compiling terminology lists/glossaries, recording information, and maintaining filing systems to support the District's bilingual record needs
- Prepare and disseminate written translations of IEPs, legal materials, workbooks, news articles, examinations, instructional materials, bulletins, correspondence, minutes, and forms
- Answer inquiries and interpret and explain words and phrases for meaning and appropriateness
- Translate verbatim and idiomatic materials and conversations, ensuring accuracy of information conveyed in both languages
- Provide simultaneous interpretations at District meetings, using headphones and microphones when available
- Maintain the content, meaning, and feeling of original material while ensuring consistency of technical terms and terminology across revisions
- Compile terminology and information for use in translations, including educational technical terms
- Keep accurate and complete records of all translated documents and maintain cultural sensitivity when conveying concepts and ideas between languages
- Translate messages simultaneously or consecutively into Spanish, preserving message content, context, and style as much as possible
- Adapt translations to students' cognitive and grade levels, collaborating with education team members as necessary
- Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information
- Maintain accurate records of all translation and interpretation activities
