Organizational

Purpose:

This unit collects, raises, and distributes biological control agents for weed and insect pest control; monitors releases; educates resource managers and the public on biocontrol; and supports reduced pesticide use in Colorado.

Major Objectives

The position implements biological control of insect pests and invasive plants. Activities include production or collection of biocontrol agents, monitoring after release, and educating end users. A research component may provide up-to-date science-based information on available agents and targets to end users. The goal is to provide safe, economical, and effective weed and pest control to agricultural producers, land managers, and the public of Colorado.

Primary

Duties
  • Rearing, collecting and distributing biocontrol agents for insect and weed pests in Colorado. Agents are typically insects but may include mites or fungi. Work may involve greenhouse production and handling equipment, with items up to 50 pounds.

  • Devise rearing techniques using host plants or insects produced at the Insectary; document methods and production numbers.

  • Collect biocontrol agents from the field using various techniques; document collection details (time, place, numbers).

  • Record data on portable GPS units; coordinate with landowners and resource managers; assess site conditions.

  • Train and oversee seasonal staff in production/collection of biocontrol agents.

  • Identify biocontrol agents and targets using genetic barcoding; support DNA barcode analysis and pathogen identification; collaborate with Insectary staff.

  • Lead molecular diagnostics laboratory and apply PCR techniques; collaborate on molecular projects.

  • Monitor biocontrol agents and plant communities; track impact on target species and plant community changes; collect and organize data.

  • Enter monitoring data into program archives; move equipment as needed (up to 50 pounds).

  • Education and outreach for Colorado’s biocontrol program; compile metrics and share information publicly and with staff for presentations and workshops.

Qualifications and Competencies
  • Required Competencies:

    Detail oriented; work well under pressure; strong relationship management and ability to represent the department in community interactions; proven ability to develop and maintain trusted stakeholder relationships; proactive problem solving with strong decision-making; highly resourceful team player who can also work independently.

Employment Details
  • Multiple vacancies; current Colorado resident required to apply.

  • Salary: $28.30 - $33.96 hourly; $58,872 - $70,644 annually.

  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Six (6) years of relevant biocontrol experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in biocontrol work.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience with insectary operations, field monitoring of invasive species, molecular identification techniques; state service as a preferred qualification.

  • Conditions of Employment:
    Valid Colorado driver’s license; willingness to travel for site work; ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions; ability to work outside normal hours.
