Position Overview

Job

This is a skilled position involving the safe and efficient operation of various types of construction equipment including but not limited to loaders, backhoes, track hoes, and other heavy machinery.

Wage: $20 to $23 an hour, dependent on experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure safe slopes on excavations and proper barricading.
  • Locate utilities and other buried lines prior to digging.
  • Perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the supervisor.
  • Apply knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.
  • Keep time and material records.
  • Understand aggregate sizes and classifications.
  • Know weight requirements for loads leaving the pit.
  • Travel from interstate highways to rural dirt roads from various locations.
  • Assist laborer at various job sites as needed, including tasks involved with laying pipe and utility lines, road construction, and asphalt laying.
Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
Work Requirements
  • Previous heavy equipment operation experience or training highly preferred.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre‑employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Write simple correspondence.
  • Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) in all units of measure.
  • Apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Work well with others in group or one‑on‑one settings.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • CDL license preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements

The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment. Occasionally the employee must stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above the shoulders. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move material up to 75 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work

Environment

The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risks of electrical shock. Noise levels are usually loud.
