Equipment Operator - Collbran - Mesa

Job Description

Performs work involving operating complex construction and right‑of‑way equipment. Repairs and maintains roads, rights‑of‑way, and performs traffic control duties. Minor repairs and maintenance on equipment are performed as needed.

Employees are subject to federal Department of Transportation Commercial Drivers Drug/Alcohol Testing and Mesa County Drug/Alcohol testing policies.

• Operate complex construction and maintenance equipment such as dump truck, front end loader, water truck, single axle and tandem axle truck, compactor, snow plow, chipper, sanders, spreaders, sealers, motor grader, mower tractor, dozer, and backhoe to perform maintenance activities.
• Assist with traffic control at road construction sites by directing traffic and assisting other equipment operators in maneuvering equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment, including checking oil and fluid levels, tire pressure, and belts.
• Demolish concrete and asphalt as directed, including excavation, backfill, tying rebar, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and placing hot or cold mix asphalt.
• Fill portable propane tanks from the propane filling station as required.
• Perform road, field, and right‑of‑way repair and maintenance duties as directed.
• Operate mower tractors and other right‑of‑way maintenance equipment to mow, edge grass, and trim trees and shrubbery.
• Remove old pipe, excavate for new pipes using backhoe and skid steer loader, transport pipe to the job site, set the new pipe in place, level, and ensure correct elevations using transit.
• Occasionally locate backfill material, load it, and haul it to the job site using various equipment; backfill excavations and remove excess backfill.
• Clear plugged culverts and storm drains using jet roder and other equipment.
• Be available for emergency call‑outs with a 60‑minute response time to emergency conditions of county roads.
• Provide clear and effective oral and written communication.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related experience.
• Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job.

• Class "A" or "B" Colorado Commercial Driver's License – Tanker Endorsement (endorsement can be obtained after hire).
• State Flagger Certification (can be attained after hire).
• Brake Certification (can be attained after hire).

This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 100 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold for long durations, outdoor atmospheric conditions, traffic noise, and dust for sustained periods. Occasional exposure to mud/rock/snow/slide conditions and flash flooding is expected. The employee is frequently exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery, as well as to electrical shock, falling from high places, and toxic or caustic chemicals.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may be exposed to shaking objects or surfaces, fumes, noxious odors, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin. Loud noise, high speed, and high volume road conditions and other traffic hazards are also common.
