Equipment Operator Ii

Performs work involving operating complex landfill equipment. With direction from the Landfill Site Manager, build and maintain roadways, perform trash placement, apply daily cover, perform site maintenance, and assist with all Campus diversion and special projects. Provides "frontline customer service" by providing general information regarding Mesa County Solid Waste Management services, products, programs, and activities to the general public, vendors, and other County departments.

• Operates complex landfill equipment such as front-end loader, water truck, landfill compactor, scraper, motor grader, dozer, and backhoe to perform maintenance activities.
• Under direction of the Landfill Site Manager, performs routine landfilling operations, including soil excavation, maintaining access roads, waste compaction, stormwater BMP installation, dust suppression, fueling equipment, hauling trash, monitoring incoming materials to ensure they are acceptable, placing final cover, material grinding, and fire mitigation.
• Maintains all waste diversion areas, including friable asbestos cell, white goods, waste tire drop‑off, public drop‑off area, mattress recycling program, and traditional recycling yard.
• Maintains access roads leading to and from the tipping floor, including grading, snow removal, and dust control.
• Ensures stormwater is managed in accordance with permits by maintaining proper grading for drainage, clearing debris from control ditches and water retention ponds, and installing temporary stormwater BMPs where needed.
• Assists in installing, repairing, and maintaining landfill gas collection system piping and wells.
• Provides litter control, including collection of blown litter, and maintains overall site cleanliness and upkeep.
• Maintains all site signage.
• Ensures materials coming into the facility are approved and in compliance with the Division's Engineering Design and Operation Plan, performing load inspections as needed.
• Directs the public to appropriate dumping areas based on the contents of their refuse.
• Directs traffic on landfill tipping deck to ensure safe unloading of refuse.
• Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on the facility's heavy, specialized equipment and machinery, such as checking oil and fluid levels, tire pressure, belts, greasing loaders, and changing or blowing off equipment filters.
• Executes necessary precautions to ensure safety and compliance with OSHA, identifying and reporting safety concerns to the Landfill Site Manager.
• Utilizes skills related to good customer service and answers customer questions related to policies and regulations of the Solid Waste Management Division, including landfill and satellite facilities, responding to citizens' needs and complaints.
• Responds in emergency situations, including after‑hours when necessary.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of related experience.
• Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job.

• Standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 150 pounds with assistance.
• Maneuver in tight places such as crawl spaces under buildings, climb ladders, step over obstacles, and step on and off machinery.
• Work often done outside and must continue even during inclement weather conditions.
• Frequent exposure to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold, traffic noise, and dust for sustained periods.
• Frequent exposure to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery.
• Occasional exposure to possible bodily injury from electrical shock, falling from high places, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Typical noise level of work environment is loud, primarily from engines, equipment, machinery, and power tools.
• Subject to Mesa County Drug and Alcohol testing policies.
