Your day at Thompson Pipe Group Morning starts with bid invitations and a quick sync with Sales to lock in market strategy. You translate that strategy into an estimating plan, reviewing drawings and specs for steel and concrete pressure pipe systems used across North America. Next, you perform quantity takeoffs, build cost models for standard and special products, and assess constructability and site risks.

You consult Engineering, Project Coordination, and plant operations to validate technical assumptions, manufacturing methods, and schedules.

Through the afternoon, you fine-tune proposals, ensure compliance with industry, regulatory, and contractual requirements, and update our cost databases. You revise estimating procedures as needed and document lessons learned. You may be asked to prepare alternate design cost analyses for other teams and to source direct cost data with our Data Processing group. You wrap the day by briefing the Corporate Estimating Manager on pipeline status and next steps.

Impact & Key Results Own the performance of estimating tasks and align activities with company priorities.

Establish and improve procedures that support the estimating and proposal cycle.

Grow and maintain an industry-focused knowledge base for estimating.

Produce complete, precise estimates that meet specifications and all applicable standards.

Collaborate effectively with Sales, Engineering, Project Coordination, and plant operations.

Core Responsibilities Prepare or assist in preparing cost estimates for both standard and special products on all bids.

Maintain current pricing for materials, supplies, and purchased services.

Stay current with design and fabrication practices impacting pipe and fittings costs; update estimating procedures accordingly.

Provide cost analyses for alternative designs, processes, or production methods affecting market competitiveness.

Obtain and evaluate direct cost data in partnership with the Data Processing function.

Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Corporate Estimating Manager.

Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.

Advanced expertise estimating proposals for manufactured steel and concrete pipe.

Experience applying regulatory requirements and industry standards.

Ability to build estimates from conceptual and schematic drawings through final contract level.

Capability to assess site exposures and construction risks and reflect them appropriately in estimates.

Skill in identifying constructability issues during the estimating process.

Demonstrated value-engineering mindset.

Desired Qualifications Bachelor’s in Construction Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Background in business, construction management, and delivery methodologies.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; respond to inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community; and present to senior leadership, public groups, and boards of directors.

Mathematic
