POSITION SUMMARY
The Safety Representative (SR) is responsible for assisting the Safety Coordinator and supporting supervisory personnel in executing Polk Mechanical’s Safety Program at the jobsite level. Safety Representatives spend the majority of their time in the field observing work, coaching crews, identifying hazards, and reinforcing compliance with Polk, GC, and regulatory requirements. This role is not limited to the tasks listed below and may be expanded as needed to support project requirements, client expectations, or evolving site conditions.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Conduct daily safety walks across mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, sheet metal, welding, and other activities.
- Identify hazards involving elevated work, rigging, hot work, confined space, pressure systems, material handling, and rotating equipment.
- Coach and correct unsafe actions; reinforce PPE and compliance requirements.
- Assist with site-specific safety programs and GC requirements.
- Communicate hazards and corrective actions daily.
- Support incident response, documentation, and follow-up.
- Assist with PATH/JHA preparation and review.
- Conduct or support orientations, toolbox talks, huddles, and PATH reviews.
- Support task-specific training (fall protection, LOTO, rigging, etc.).
- Assist with inspections of ladders, tools, cords, welding equipment, grinders, rigging, lifting devices, and elevated platforms.
- Verify guarding, barricading, housekeeping, and permitting.
- Ensure EAP information, signage, and safety boards remain updated.
- Assist with PATH/JHA form review
- Identify safety improvement opportunities.
- Recommend additional controls as needed.
- Assist in collecting statements, photos, and documentation.
- Support root-cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
- Support Lockout/Tagout procedures for mechanical and HVAC systems.
- Assist with verification and documentation of isolations.
- Communicate with Safety Coordinator, Foremen, Superintendents, and GC teams.
- Participate in safety meetings as needed.
- Serve as a resource to field personnel.
- No production responsibilities while assigned to safety.
- Model professionalism, integrity, and safety culture.
- Maintain strong relationships across all trades.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, or construction operations preferred
- Valid driver’s license meeting company requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to safety and hazard recognition
- Ability to work overtime and flexible schedules
- Physical ability to walk and access elevations in construction environments
- Teamwork-oriented with strong integrity
- Basic construction safety knowledge
- Strong prioritization skills
- Personal commitment to a safety-first mindset
CERTIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
- Certifications:
OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred - Education:
High school diploma or GED - Experience:
3–5 years in construction and/or safety preferred
