Designs, develops, and tests a wide variety of containers used for the protection, display, and handling of products. Determines packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering. Designs package exteriors considering such factors as product identification, sales appeal, aesthetic quality, printing and production techniques.

Responsibilities may include documentation management and an understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

The Level 2 Packaging Engineer supports the program’s packaging and shipping efforts under the guidance of senior packaging staff. Working with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), suppliers, the Lockheed Martin Shipping Department, and the Packaging, Handling, Storage & Transportation (PHS&T) organization, the engineer assists in defining, developing, and documenting packaging solutions for system, subsystem, and component hardware including both hazardous and non-hazardous shipments.

The role contributes to compliance with contractual packaging clauses, DOT CFR
49 Performance Oriented Packaging (POP) requirements, and other regulatory mandates while participating in continuous improvement activities.

Core Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with IPTs, suppliers, and the Shipping team to gather packaging and transportation requirements and support the creation of clear specifications.
  • Contribute to system level and subsystem packaging designs; help draft Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) and support procurement/fabrication of packaging.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Assist in ensuring compliance with contractual packaging clauses, DOT CFR
    49 POP, ICAO, IMDG, ASTM 3951, and applicable MIL SPECs.
  • POP Testing Support:
    Prepare test documentation, coordinate test facilities, observe POP tests, and compile data for senior engineers to generate formal test reports.
  • Technical Review Participation:
    Attend and document PHS&T technical reviews; help schedule and prepare review materials.
  • Root Cause & Lessons Learned:
    Perform initial analysis of damaged shipments, document findings, and recommend corrective actions for follow up by senior staff.
  • Process Improvement:
    Evaluate emerging packaging materials and techniques; recommend cost effective alternatives to senior engineers.
  • Documentation & Training:
    Maintain Packaging Data Content (PDC) deliverables, create/update technical documents, and assist in delivering briefings or training sessions.
  • Logistics Coordination:
    Support the larger PHS&T team with shipping requests, hazardous material paperwork (MSDS, labeling, marking), and coordinate with the LM Shipping Department.
  • Travel & Overtime:
    Provide on-site support and occasional travel (domestic/international) to meet program milestones and support test events as required.
Basic Qualifications
  • Knowledge of basic shipping practices, inspection requirements, and related documentation.
  • Understanding of Federal DOT regulations (49 CFR Parts) and hazardous material handling fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) and POP testing concepts.
  • Ability to use standard enterprise computer systems (e.g., purchase‑request tools, Microsoft Office).
