The purpose of this position is to supervise the daily activities of the City's detention staff and inmates. This is accomplished by ensuring that all policies and procedures are followed; providing leadership to subordinates, making decisions, conducting annual employee performance reviews, coaching and mentoring. Reviewing intakes, releases, screening and classifications. Other duties include ensuring that the jail is properly staffed on a daily basis;

assuring that all inmates are housed in the jail; making sure that the jail is properly maintained and secure at all times and interacting with other City employees and the general public.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises personnel by observing and monitoring work tasks; providing feedback to employees; evaluating work performance; assisting in correcting deficiencies; coordinating training for department personnel; scheduling work assignments and providing input on hiring and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensures that proper staffing levels are present each day of work by authorizing overtime to maintain proper levels.
  • Maintains security of entire jail by ensuring adequate staff members are working and making sure all doors are secure at all times.
  • Maintains the security and safety of inmates by observing the area to make sure that prisoners are safe and secure at all times and monitoring activities to ensure that no fights, suicides, riots, fires, or any other dangerous conditions exist.
  • Ensures that all detention officers are properly trained by making sure that workers are effectively performing necessary tasks and adequately informing the detention staff to assure proper and efficient job performance.
  • Verifies proper stock of supplies by monitoring levels of food and prisoner supplies such as toiletry items, clothing, sanitary supplies and office supplies.
  • Makes sure that proper documents are turned into the Detention Manager (chain of command) by assuring that paperwork is filled out in a timely manner; verifying the accuracy of documents to ensure that the cash flow from the bond desk operations are audited correctly; preparing the money drop; reviewing the paperwork for inmates in custody and completing daily till reports.
  • Ensures that detention officers are performing essential prisoner processing duties by searching, fingerprinting and taking pictures of inmates; giving them showers, mediation and any necessary information; completing hourly rounds and verifying inmates property for safekeeping.
  • Approving prisoner releases by confirming that all paperwork is correct.
  • May assist in escorting inmates from one area to another, taking physical action to prevent escapes and/or subdue combative/violent inmates with the appropriate use of force.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years as Detention Officer; one (1) year preferred of supervisor experience; with preference in municipal jail.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License required; TCOLE certification, defensive tactics training, and other mandatory training as required within 1 year from date of hire.
  • Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Receives general direction:
    The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
  • Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or a work unit; scheduling work assignments; monitoring performance; providing input on performance evaluation; and providing input on hire and disciplinary actions. A first line supervisor typically performs these functions.
  • Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
  • Discussion Frequent:
