Duties

Help

Assists the Chief of the Designation and Sentence Computation Center (DSCC) in providing direction, guidance, and coordination of all activities on a national level with regard to the center.

Works in close liaison with the United States Marshals Service, United States District Courts, the District of Columbia Superior Court, the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, state agencies and institutions, the United States Parole Commission, United States Attorneys, United States Pardon Attorney's Office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, United States Army and other branches of the Armed Forces, United States Postal Service, Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System and other divisions of the Department of Justice and various other governmental and non-governmental agencies.

Monitors the development and implementation of DSCC programs and procedures throughout the BOP through comparative data collection, and periodic visits to field locations.

Serves as a subject matter expert on sentence computation and designation issues.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

Education:

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience:

You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is directly related experience that included substantial involvement with a correctional program and provided a thorough knowledge of correctional techniques, or experience in meeting and dealing with people that demonstrated the ability to work effectively with inmates and associates in a correctional environment.

Experience must have also demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully. This includes (1) understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions; (2) a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution's internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures; and (3) training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs, and maintaining high standards or work objectives.

This experience must have been gained in an administrative position, or in other positions that included the successful direction, or assistance in the direction of, an entire correctional program or a major phase of such a program.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

• Experience in conducting various studies and preparing reports on good-time reviews, sentence computation accuracy, and designation procedures.
• Experience in overseeing a program, policy, or procedure; or assisting in planning, directing, coordinating and evaluating policy relating to a correctional program.
• Experience serving as a technical expert on designations, sentence computation, and good time accounting.
• Experience in the development and implementation of Designation and Sentence Computation Center programs and procedures throughout the Bureau of Prisons through comparative data collection and periodic visits to field locations.
• Experience in resolving complex computation issues referred to the Designation and Sentence Computation Center from the field, other agencies and the United States District Courts, closely working with the Department of Justice and other interested parties in identifying and resolving unusual and complicated issues.
• Experience in providing training on agency policies and procedures relating to inmate designation, sentence computation, jail credit and application of good conduct credit laws.
