Medium Voltage Cable Installer / Terminator

The Medium Voltage (MV) Cable Installer / Terminator is responsible for the safe installation, preparation, termination, splicing, and testing of medium-voltage power cable systems on data center, BESS, substation, utility, and other critical electrical infrastructure projects.

This position requires hands‑on experience working with medium‑voltage cable systems, typically ranging from 5kV through 35kV, and a strong understanding of cable preparation, insulation systems, stress control, grounding, shielding, terminations, and manufacturer installation requirements.

What You'll Do

Install medium-voltage cable in underground conduit, duct banks, cable tray, equipment, switch gear, transformers, PCS equipment, and other electrical systems. Perform cable pulling, handling, routing, dressing, supporting, and securing of MV conductors. Prepare and terminate medium-voltage cables ranging from 5kV to 35kV. Install MV termination systems including:

  • Cold-shrink terminations
  • Heat-shrink terminations
  • Stress cones
  • Dead-break elbows
  • Load-break elbows, where applicable
  • Separable connectors and T-body connectors
  • Outdoor and indoor termination kits

Perform MV cable splicing when required by project scope and technician qualifications. Properly remove cable jackets, insulation shields, semi conductive layers, insulation, and conductor shielding without damaging the cable system. Install grounding braids, shield grounding components, concentric neutrals, grounding adapters, and associated hardware. Install compression lugs and connectors utilizing manufacturer-approved tooling and dies. Verify proper crimping sequence, number of crimps, connector orientation, and cable preparation dimensions.

Follow manufacturer-specific installation instructions for all termination and splice kits. Maintain required minimum bending radius and pulling tension requirements during cable installation. Inspect cable before and after pulling for damage to jackets, shielding, or insulation. Perform cable identification, phase identification, labeling, and equipment termination verification. Assist with or perform cable testing activities including continuity, insulation resistance, VLF, and other required acceptance testing as permitted by project requirements and technician qualifications.

Coordinate completed installations with QA/QC personnel for inspection and documentation. Complete termination checklists, cable logs, torque records, and other required quality documentation. Maintain cleanliness and environmental controls during cable preparation and termination activities. Identify installation deficiencies or damaged cable and immediately communicate concerns to project supervision. Maintain tools, cable preparation equipment, crimpers, torque tools, and specialty MV equipment in proper working condition.

Follow project-specific electrical safety requirements, LOTO procedures, NFPA 70E requirements, and company safety policies.

What You'll Bring

Minimum 3–5 years of electrical construction experience, with demonstrated experience installing and terminating medium-voltage cable. Hands‑on experience with 5kV, 15kV, 25kV, and/or 35kV cable systems preferred. Experience installing stress‑control and termination systems. Ability to properly use cable preparation tools, stripping tools, penciling tools, insulation preparation equipment, hydraulic crimpers, and torque tools. Strong attention to detail
