Miller Johnson, one of Michigan’s largest full-service law firms, is seeking an experienced full-time Billing Specialist for our Grand Rapids office. The Billing Specialist is responsible for managing the full client billing lifecycle for the firm, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant invoicing. This role works closely with attorneys and staff to support billing operations, maintain client and accounting systems, monitor work in progress, and address client billing inquiries.
This position plays a key role in supporting the firm’s financial operations and maintaining positive client relationships.
- Manage the client billing cycle, including client/matter intake, time-entry, preparation of pre-bills and final invoices, electronic billing, monitoring write-offs and other adjustments, special billing arrangements, reporting, etc.
- Monitor and follow-up on invoice approvals and address rejections or discrepancies promptly in electronic billing platforms
- Serve as a resource and consult with firm attorneys and staff on accounting and billing matters
- Coordinate with attorneys and practice groups to resolve billing issues and discrepancies
- Monitor new client intake and work in progress to ensure timely billing
- Professionally represent the firm while responding to client inquiries regarding billing and invoicing
- All other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in a professional services firm preferred
- Knowledge of general accounting principles preferred
- Proficient in the use of accounting/time and billing software
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Zoom with ability to learn new systems
- Strong knowledge of electronic billings systems such as Legal Tracker, TyMetrix 360° and Bill Blast
- Proactive, organized and detail‑oriented to apply strategies to ensure projects are effectively prioritized and executed
- Exceptional client service, independent judgment, and discretion to ensure client confidentiality
- Detailed oriented with strong organizational skills
- Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment
