Unit Secretary – Day Shift
Location:
Main Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI
Employment Type:
Full-time, 40 hours per week, 8‑hour shifts. Requires third weekend and holiday rotation.
Compensation:
Starting wage $19.50 per hour, eligible for increases based on experience.

Provide administrative and patient‑facing support within the rehabilitation hospital, acting as a liaison among multiple departments and managing calls, admissions, and transfers.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Communicate and exchange information promptly with acute care hospital employees.
- Complete physician orders and nursing requests, communicating per policy.
- Coordinate patient activities and tests with the RN.
- Maintain updated lists for nursing and physicians.
- Answer telephones, take messages, and forward messages appropriately.
- Perform clerical functions for admissions, discharges, and transfers per protocol.
- Monitor supply levels, order supplies, and manage inventory placement.
- Use multiple communication systems (telephone, email, face‑to‑face) efficiently.
- Orient and train new employees; complete required training and competency assessments.
- Utilize Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and the EMR system; possess basic PC skills.
- Handle department tasks as assigned and contribute to policy revisions.
Demonstrate excellent customer service, promote teamwork, and handle confidential information with discretion.
Quality Improvement ResponsibilitiesIdentify problems, seek solutions, and support patient and family satisfaction initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications- Minimum 2 years college experience or equivalent in administrative work.
- High accuracy in data entry.
- Excellent telephone and customer service skills.
- Outstanding organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with a positive attitude.
- Associate degree in a health‑related field.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical rehabilitation.
- Mostly stationary work.
- Occasionally move around work area.
- Frequent keyboard use.
- Up to 10 pounds lift occasionally.
