Position:
Directional Drill Superintendent
Location:
Michigan Preferred (open to individuals willing to travel and work in various locations)
Salary: $175 - $220k
R-2 Contractors is currently seeking an experienced and motivated Directional Drill Superintendent to lead and oversee directional drilling operations on heavy civil and power infrastructure projects. This role is critical to ensuring drilling operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, environmental requirements, and company standards.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise all directional drilling activities on assigned projects
- Lead daily drilling operations including bore planning, equipment setup, drilling execution, pullback operations, and demobilization
- Review and interpret project drawings, bore profiles, specifications, and geotechnical information to ensure accurate installation
- Coordinate drilling activities with Project Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, clients, inspectors, and utility owners
- Manage drill crews, locators, mud engineers, laborers, and subcontractors
- Enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and site-specific safety plans
- Conduct JHAs, toolbox talks, safety audits, and incident investigations as needed
- Monitor drilling fluid management, environmental compliance, and containment procedures
- Track daily production, materials, equipment usage, and changes in field conditions
- Troubleshoot drilling challenges related to ground conditions, tooling, equipment performance, and bore alignment
- Oversee maintenance, inspection, and readiness of drilling rigs, tooling, and support equipment
- Support project schedules, cost control, reporting, and change management
- Train and mentor field personnel to promote best practices, safety awareness, and operational excellence
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- 7+ years of experience in directional drilling within heavy civil construction (dry utility)
- Minimum of 3+ years in a Superintendent or supervisory leadership role
- Strong knowledge of drilling equipment, tooling, drilling fluids, and varied ground conditions
- Experience with utility, power, pipeline, electrical, water, sewer, or fiber installations
- Ability to read, interpret, and build work from construction drawings, bore profiles, and specifications
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- OSHA 30 preferred
- First Aid / CPR certification preferred
- Must be a team player and willing to perform multiple duties as needed
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-driven
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and maintain a DVR acceptable to the company’s insurance carrier
- Willing and able to work long hours, travel, and perform in varying weather and field conditions
