Position: Student Advocate (Full-Time)

West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science

West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES) is a charter school dedicated to environmental science and STEAM education. The school is located at 4463 Leonard St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534.

Student Advocate

Job Type: Full‑time*

Job Goal

Provide guidance and advocacy to students to ensure they meet academic and behavioral requirements to move to the next grade level, and offer safety and security for all students and families.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • De‑escalate students who are in crisis.
  • Assist with communicating consistent classroom management processes and procedures in alignment with teachers and school expectations.
  • Communicate accurately and timely with students and their families to ensure a continuous school‑family partnership.
  • Link students and their families to school and community resources.
  • Evaluate student progress including attendance, academic, and behavioral data.
  • Coordinate with community partners to build resources.
  • Use restorative justice processes to focus on repairing harm through inclusive processes that engage all stakeholders, shifting discipline from punishment to learning.
  • Make home visits to obtain information about students.
  • Keep accurate and timely records of student information in Power School, parent, staff, and community contacts.
  • Participate in stakeholder conferences to develop student action plans.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during instructional and non‑instructional time.
  • Maintain confidentiality when dealing with students, families, staff, and community members.
  • Facilitate social and emotional growth with students.
  • Support students struggling with homelessness through community resources.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with school personnel and students in a diverse school community.
  • Solid record of punctuality.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge and skills working with at‑risk students.
  • PBIS experience and/or CPI training preferred.
